🐍 The Six Steps That Turn a Glance Into Bondage
“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”

Temptation does not begin with an action. It begins with an image, a suggestion, a distraction placed in front of your eyes or your mind. Scripture and experience reveal a consistent, six-step pattern behind every fall:
- Attention — Satan distracts to gain your attention. Attention is the currency of the flesh, and it is the doorway to the heart. Nothing takes root inside you that did not first pass through what you looked at, listened to, or dwelt on.
- Covet — As you meditate on the distraction, it produces imaginations that entertain the mind. It lingers long enough to plant a seed.
- Desire — That seed grows into desire. This is what Paul called the desire of the flesh: “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
- Conviction — The desire hardens into a firmly rooted conviction to do what pleases the flesh rather than the Spirit. At this point, the enemy has a firm grip.
- Action — Temptation matures and moves from the inside out, expressing itself as stealing, fornication, adultery, deceit, or whatever form the flesh craves.
- Bondage (or Death) — The chaining process of sin is complete. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
Prophet TB Joshua warned about this exact trap:
“If we fail to see that there are powers that cause one to be bowed down in bondage, we will fight the wrong battle.”
Most people fight the sixth step, the visible sin, while ignoring the first step, the attention that started it all. Whoever owns your attention shapes your meditation. Meditation shapes desire. Desire shapes conviction. Conviction shapes behavior. Behavior shapes destiny.
👁️ Eve Saw First: The Attention That Opened the Door
“The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.”
— Genesis 3:6 (NLT)
Watch the sequence carefully. Eve saw first. That was attention. She then coveted it, desiring it because it was pleasing to the eye and desirable for gaining wisdom. That desire built up until it turned into a settled conviction in her heart. Only then did she take it, acting on what her heart had already decided.
The fruit did not force itself into her hand. Her eyes carried it to her heart long before her hand carried it to her mouth. This is why the serpent did not need to touch her. He only needed her attention.
💰 Achan’s Buried Sin: When Covetous Eyes Become Covetous Hands
“When I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight, then I coveted them and took them; and behold, they are concealed in the earth inside my tent with the silver underneath it.”

The same pattern repeats with Achan. He saw first, that was attention. He coveted, desiring the mantle, silver, and gold because they were pleasing to the eye. That desire built up within him until it became a heart conviction, which then turned into a visible reality through the action of taking them.
Israel had just won a great victory at Jericho. Achan’s fall did not happen on the battlefield. It happened quietly, in his own gaze, long before he ever touched the forbidden spoil. One man’s unguarded attention cost an entire nation a battle at Ai.
🛏️ David on the Rooftop: How a Glance Became a Grave
“One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her… Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her.”
— 2 Samuel 11:2–4
David saw a woman bathing. That was attention. He coveted, desiring her because she was beautiful and pleasing to the eye. That lustful desire turned to conviction as he sent messengers to get her, and the desire became a visible reality through the action of sleeping with her.
David was not a novice in the faith. He was a man after God’s own heart, a worshiper, a warrior, a king. Yet he fell to the same six-step process that toppled Eve and Achan, because temptation does not respect spiritual maturity. It only respects unguarded attention.
⚖️ Temptation Is Satan’s Counterfeit of Faith
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
— Romans 10:17
Faith originates from God’s Word. Temptation originates from Satan’s presentation. Both enter through the same senses, the eyes, the ears, the imagination, but they originate from opposite sources and travel toward opposite destinations.
Prophet TB Joshua described temptation this way:
“Temptation is the presentation of evil; it is an opportunity to choose temporary pleasure rather than permanent gain.”
It is a presentation because it is not the real thing. It is a deceptive instrument that presents itself as something tangible because it acts on what is seen by the human eye. Eve saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious. That is the entire strategy in one sentence: make evil look desirable enough that the eyes carry it to the heart before the mind can object.
Temptation offers temporary pleasure that is most attractive to the flesh. Faith offers permanent pleasure most beneficial to the spirit. This is why God often allows situations and challenges of life to bring discomfort to the flesh, while at the same time edifying the spirit to discern and overcome Satan’s temptation with ease.
“God will not use pleasure to strengthen your desire, and He will not use pleasure to keep you for a new level. He will not use pleasure to keep you for the challenges ahead. It is one of these foolish things that is always been used to do that.”

📖 The Process of Faith: From Hearing to Abundant Life
Just as temptation has a process, faith has a process too, and it runs on the exact same rails, only in the opposite direction:
- Attention to God’s Word — Faith is heavenly currency. When we read the Word, we create fertile ground to plant the seed of faith in our hearts. Faith enters through the senses, but it originates with God.
- Meditation on God’s Word — As we meditate on the Word we receive, it begins to change us by renewing our mind. Meditation on the Word is a visit to God Himself. Prophet TB Joshua taught, “God’s Word refreshes our mind and God’s Spirit renews our strength,” and also said, “If you take God’s Word to heart and truly make it a part of you by meditation, it will by its very nature change you by renewing your mind, and when it does, you’ll find yourself moved to act with God.” Read more in How Meditation on God’s Word Prepares You to Be Used by God.
- Belief — Belief is the root of the seed of the Word planted in your heart, formed as we read and meditate on what God has said.
- Conviction — The belief in our heart matures into a firm heart’s decision, the same way desire matures into conviction on the temptation side, except this conviction is aimed at God rather than self.
- Obedience — We confess and act on the Word in reality. Faith, a supernatural force given by God’s Spirit, activates belief, and it is no longer hidden. It now has life and can speak, declare, and obey God in the reality of life. “Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works” (James 2:26). Prophet TB Joshua put it plainly: “There is power in my mouth, the belief in my heart is released by faith out of my mouth.”
- Spiritual Life — Jesus said, “I have come so that you may have abundant life” (John 10:10). The thief’s purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. God’s purpose is to give a rich and satisfying life.
“My son, forget not thou my Law, but let thine heart keep my commandments, for they shall increase the length of thy days and the years of life, and thy prosperity.” — Proverbs 3:1–2
Temptation imitates the process of faith, but it directs the heart toward self instead of toward God. It presents pleasure and calls it gain, while faith presents obedience and delivers actual life.
⚔️ Jesus in the Wilderness: Winning the Battle for Attention
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
— Matthew 26:41
Look closely at Luke 4. Satan tempts Jesus three times, and every single time, he opens with an appeal to attention. Look at these stones and command them to become bread. Look at all the kingdoms of the world. Throw yourself down from the highest point of the temple. Every temptation begins by trying to capture what Jesus was looking at and thinking about.
Jesus never argues with the images Satan presents. He does not entertain the imagination or weigh the offer. Instead, He redirects His attention immediately back to Scripture: “It is written…” Every single time, He refuses to meditate on Satan’s presentation. Instead, He meditates on God’s revelation. That is why He wins.
When Jesus later told His disciples to “watch and pray,” He was emphasizing exactly this kind of spiritual alertness. To watch means to be careful about what you give your attention to. Prophet TB Joshua said it directly:
“You are responsible for what you give your attention to.”
There is a battle for attention happening in the spirit realm right now. Satan uses temptation, a presentation of something that may appear harmless, a well-disguised evil dressed to look ordinary, to fight for your attention because your attention is the doorway to your heart, mind, and will. His mission has never changed: to overthrow your relationship with God. This is why the psalmist warned, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” (Proverbs 4:23). 📊 Two Processes, One Battlefield
Both processes run through your senses. Only one of them ends in life.

The mechanism is identical. The origin and the destination are opposites. That is the entire deception in one table: Satan does not need a new strategy, he only needs your attention on his presentation instead of God’s.
🛡️ Guard Your Heart: How to Watch and Pray Today
Knowing the process is not enough. You must act on it deliberately, the same way David chose to fix his eyes and heart on God through meditation even in the night hours (Psalm 63:6).
- Interrupt attention at step one. Do not wait until desire or conviction to resist. The easiest place to defeat temptation is before it has your attention, not after it has your will.
- Replace Satan’s presentation with Scripture. When Jesus was tempted, He did not debate the offer, He quoted the Word. Have specific verses ready before the moment of testing arrives, not during it.
- Watch and pray without ceasing. Apostle Paul urged believers to constantly pray (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer keeps your spirit alert to what your flesh would otherwise welcome in.
- Feed meditation on God’s Word daily. What you fix your eyes on will eventually take root in your heart. Starve the process of temptation by leaving it nothing to feed on.
- Remember the destination, not just the pleasure. Temptation only shows you the fruit. It never shows you the bondage that follows. Faith only shows you the obedience required. It rarely advertises the abundant life waiting on the other side, so choose it anyway.

People of God, no state of being is as rewarding as living in tune with God. To watch and pray is to live in tune with God, and not dance to the enticing rhythm of the enemy.
🙏 Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to guard the gateway of my attention. Forgive me for every time I let my eyes carry what my heart was never meant to hold. Where Eve, Achan, and David fell, let me stand, because You have shown me the pattern the enemy hides behind. Help me to watch and pray, to meditate on Your Word instead of Satan’s presentation, so that what I give my attention to today builds faith in me and not bondage. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
