Are You Thinking of Going Out to Preach in Public Places? This Message is for You
Acts 1:4, Romans 8:14, Acts 19:13-16, Psalm 23:4, Luke 24:49, Ephesians 6:12-13, Isaiah 40:31, Proverbs 3:5-6
Empowerment by the Holy Spirit: A Non-Negotiable Requirement
God has sent the Holy Spirit to empower and guide Jesus’s followers—you and me—for His divine mission. Without this empowerment, going out to preach, teach, or even share your faith in public places can become a dangerous mission.
Why You Need the Holy Spirit’s Empowerment
1️⃣ The Holy Spirit Equips and Protects You
Acts 1:4: “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift He promised, as I told you before.”
Jesus instructed His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit before embarking on their mission. Why? Because it’s the Holy Spirit who empowers us to:
Speak with boldness and clarity.
Perform signs and wonders.
Resist spiritual opposition.
2️⃣ Acts of Worship Without the Holy Spirit Are Meaningless
If you preach, teach, or share your faith without the guidance of the Holy Spirit, your efforts can become:
Idle and ineffective: Your words will lack power and conviction.
Destructive: Without spiritual wisdom, you may unknowingly mislead or offend.
Romans 8:14: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
- If God is not leading you, you are walking a dangerous path.
3️⃣ We Live in Perilous Times
- In these days, the spiritual atmosphere is tense. Opposition to the Gospel is growing. Without the backing of the Holy Spirit, even a well-meaning attempt to share the Gospel could provoke spiritual or physical retaliation.
The Danger of Acting Without the Holy Spirit
💥 The Example of the Seven Sons of Sceva
Acts 19:13-16: “Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, ‘In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.’”
These seven sons of a Jewish high priest, Sceva, tried to use the name of Jesus without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
What happened? The evil spirit overpowered them and attacked them because they were not operating under the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
💡 Key Takeaway:
Calling on Jesus’s name without the backing of the Holy Spirit is like provoking Satan without protection. You may be putting yourself in harm’s way.
Spiritual Battles Require Spiritual Preparation
1️⃣ Don’t Go Without God’s Guidance
“Where God guides, He provides.”
If you are led by the Spirit of God, even when you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will fear no evil because He is with you (Psalm 23:4).
Without God’s guidance, you may attract spiritual attacks that you are not prepared for.
2️⃣ The Power of Waiting on the Holy Spirit
Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received power from on high. Why? Because spiritual battles require spiritual weapons, and those weapons are only provided by the Holy Spirit.
Luke 24:49: “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
3️⃣ Facing Spiritual Adversaries Without the Holy Spirit Can Backfire
Just like the sons of Sceva, confronting spiritual forces without the Holy Spirit’s empowerment can lead to defeat.
Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
What Should You Do?
1️⃣ Seek the Empowerment of the Holy Spirit
Before going out to preach, pray for the Holy Spirit to empower, guide, and protect you.
John 14:26: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
2️⃣ Wait Patiently for the Holy Spirit
Don’t rush into spiritual battles unprepared. Take the time to grow in your relationship with God, study His Word, and wait for the Holy Spirit’s direction.
Isaiah 40:31: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
3️⃣ Be Led, Not Driven
- The Holy Spirit leads; Satan drives. If you feel an overwhelming urge to act but lack peace in your heart, take a step back and pray. The Holy Spirit’s guidance always comes with peace and assurance.
4️⃣ Stay in Constant Communication with God
Pray without ceasing. Ask God to show you where He wants you to go and what He wants you to do.
Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Final Word of Encouragement
Child of God, remember:
Don’t rush out unprepared. Wait for the Holy Spirit to guide you.
Be intentional in seeking His empowerment—without the Holy Spirit, our efforts are empty.
Where the Holy Spirit leads, He protects and provides. When you move under His direction, no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).
