Differences Between a Clean and Pure Heart

Matthew 5:8, Matthew 15:8

Understanding the Clean Heart and Pure Heart

In Matthew 5:8, Jesus said:
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

This profound statement emphasizes the importance of heart purity in our walk with God. Prophet T.B. Joshua offered a beautiful explanation of the differences between a clean heart and a pure heart, helping us understand their distinct roles in our spiritual journey.

What is a Clean Heart?

A clean heart is one that:

  1. Embraces God and His Lordship

    • It is a heart that has been cleansed from sin and is open to the things of God. A clean heart welcomes Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    • It is a beginning stage of a spiritual relationship with God—a heart prepared to receive His Word and guidance.

  2. Focuses on God’s Forgiveness and Mercy

    • A clean heart recognizes its need for God’s cleansing and forgiveness. Psalm 51:10 says:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
  3. Represents Spiritual Growth in Progress

    • T.B. Joshua likened a clean heart to a boy, implying that it reflects a stage of spiritual growth that still has room to mature.

What is a Pure Heart?

A pure heart is one that:

  1. Is Completely Free of Distractions

    • A pure heart is undivided in its focus on God. It is not swayed by circumstances or material concerns.

    • A person with a pure heart can say:

      • “Whether I am healed or not, He is my Healer.”

      • “Whether I am blessed or not, I will stay true to Him.”

    • This unwavering trust and devotion mark a mature faith.

  2. Is Influenced by the Holy Spirit

    • Those who are inwardly pure live under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Their actions, words, and thoughts are aligned with God’s will, reflecting the character of Christ.
  3. Represents Spiritual Maturity

    • T.B. Joshua likened a pure heart to a father, symbolizing a mature, steady, and unwavering faith in God.
  4. Leads to the Happiness of Seeing God

    • Jesus promises that those with a pure heart will see God. This means experiencing His presence, favor, and glory—both now and in eternity.

    • True Christianity lies in the purity of the heart. It is not about outward appearances but about inner devotion.

Key Differences Between a Clean Heart and a Pure Heart

Clean Heart Pure Heart
Welcomes God into one’s life. Is fully surrendered to God and undistracted by the world.
Represents spiritual growth in progress (boy). Represents spiritual maturity (father).
Seeks God’s forgiveness and cleansing. Lives under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
Open to God but may still struggle with distractions or immaturity. Fully committed and unwavering in faith, regardless of circumstances.

The Danger of a Divided Heart

Matthew 15:8 warns:
“These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.”

A person may appear outwardly religious—a pastor, teacher, or believer—but still lack purity of heart. This is hypocrisy: saying one thing but meaning another. True Christianity is about the state of the heart, not just outward actions or words.

A pure heart is free from hypocrisy, devoted entirely to God, and guided by the Holy Spirit.

How to Cultivate a Pure Heart

  1. Seek God Daily

    • Spend time in prayer and the Word of God to align your heart with His will.
  2. Ask for the Holy Spirit’s Help

    • Purity of heart comes from the work of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to guide your thoughts, actions, and desires.
  3. Let Go of Distractions

    • Identify the things that pull your focus away from God and surrender them to Him.
  4. Trust God Unconditionally

    • Whether you receive what you ask for or not, remain steadfast in your faith, knowing God’s plans are higher than yours.
  5. Live a Life of Integrity

    • Let your actions align with your words. Be authentic in your faith and obedient to God’s commands.

Prayer

“Lord Jesus, create in me a clean heart and renew a faithful spirit within me. Help me to grow into a pure heart that is fully devoted to You, free from distractions, and guided by Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to trust You in all circumstances and to live a life that reflects Your glory. Thank You for the promise that the pure in heart will see You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
