Take Care of Your Heart
Take Care of Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23, Matthew 5:8, Colossians 3:16
What Does “Heart” Refer To?
The heart referred to here is not the physical organ but the inner man—the real you. It is the seat of:
Desire
Will
Emotion
Wisdom
Knowledge and Understanding
Conscience
Moral Character
The heart is where our deepest thoughts, motivations, and values reside. It is also the communication point and contact point for the Holy Spirit. However, many hearts today have become a conflict room, torn between:
Flesh and spirit
Love and hate
Faith and doubt
God Is Interested in the State of Your Heart
God looks beyond outward appearances and actions to examine the state of your heart. Proverbs 4:23 says:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Your heart must be at its best for God, because the Holy Spirit expresses Himself through your heart. A heart that is filled with God’s Word becomes a vessel for His love, faith, and power.
Matthew 5:8 reminds us:
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
A pure heart is one that is free from conflict, bitterness, and sin—fully aligned with God’s will.
The Conflict in the Heart
Because of fleshly desires, many hearts have become battlegrounds:
Between Flesh and Spirit
- The flesh seeks gratification, while the spirit seeks God’s will. This creates a constant struggle within the heart.
Between Love and Hate
- Instead of unconditional love, many hearts harbor grudges, bitterness, and unforgiveness.
Between Faith and Doubt
- Doubt, fueled by fear and life’s challenges, often competes with the faith God has planted in our hearts.
God desires to restore peace and purity to our hearts so that they may serve as holy vessels for His Spirit.
How Can Your Heart Be at Its Best?
Your heart cannot be at its best without being spiritual. True spirituality comes only when:
We Live in the Word
The Word of God must take root in our hearts.
Colossians 3:16 says:
“Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”
The Word Lives in Us
- It’s not enough to read or hear God’s Word. We must meditate on it, obey it, and let it transform us from within.
The Word Builds the Nature of God in Us
- As we live by the Word, the nature of God—His love, peace, humility, and righteousness—is built in us. This allows the Holy Spirit to work freely through our hearts.
Practical Steps to Care for Your Heart
Guard Your Heart
- Be mindful of what you allow into your heart through your thoughts, words, and actions. Avoid toxic influences like ungodly media, gossip, or bitterness.
Feed Your Heart with God’s Word
- Spend time daily reading, meditating on, and obeying Scripture. The Word purifies and strengthens your heart.
Pray for the Holy Spirit’s Guidance
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you keep your heart aligned with God’s will.
Practice Forgiveness and Love
- Let go of grudges, bitterness, and hate. Choose to walk in love, as Jesus commanded.
Cultivate Faith and Trust
- When doubts arise, replace them with God’s promises. Declare His Word over your life and trust Him to guide you.
Prayer
“Lord Jesus, I surrender my heart to You. Help me to guard it against the desires of the flesh and make it a holy vessel for Your Spirit. Fill my heart with Your Word and build Your nature in me, so I may live a life that glorifies You. Holy Spirit, guide me to love, forgive, and trust in You always. Amen.”
