How to Pray in the Spirit
“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”— Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)
“Pray Without Ceasing” - 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer is not just words. Prayer is a spiritual transaction—a divine communion between man and God. Every true saint knows that prayer must move from routine to relationship, from noise to depth, from flesh to Spirit.
To pray in the Spirit is to let the Holy Spirit pray through you. It is to allow the Holy Spirit to express Himself through your heart, your thoughts, and your words—beyond physicality and beyond limitation. It is to let God’s Spirit overshadow your own.
It’s not about eloquence, volume, or length, but about a free, sincere, Word-filled heart in constant communication with God.
🌿 Habits of Spirit-Led Prayer
🔥 1. Start Your Day on Your Knees
Every spiritual journey must begin at the altar. As soon as you get out of bed, fall to your knees and say:
“Thank You, Lord. Thank You for everything.”
Say it with your whole heart. Your first words in the day should not be to a person, but to your Heavenly Father.
This is not for performance, but for surrender. Not because all is perfect, but because His mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:23). Thanksgiving unlocks His gates (Psalm 100:4)
“Very early in the morning… Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” — Mark 1:35
🔥 2. Make Your Heart a Prayer Room — Even in Public
The greatest altar is not made with stones—it is your heart. You are God’s altar.
The physical altar only trains your heart to become His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19).
Constantly pray in your heart:
In the bus, in the car, on the plane, or in a waiting room—keep your heart busy with silent prayer:
“In the name of Jesus… In the blood of Jesus Christ…”
“Take more of me, and give me more of You, Lord.”
By doing this, you disarm the devil. No attack can take you by surprise. When you carry prayer in your heart everywhere you go, Satan cannot catch you unprepared. When you live in a spirit of prayer, Jesus is just one whisper away.
“Pray continually.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17
🔥 3. Pray in Silence When Alone
There is a misconception that the louder you pray, the more God hears. But prayer is not in volume—it is in sincerity and Spirit.
“When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.” — Matthew 6:6
You don’t need to shout in private prayer. God is Spirit—He hears the whisper of your heart louder than the noise of your lips. Shouting is only necessary in warfare prayers or when there is a congregation.
Private prayer is not performance. You can pray silently and still shake the heavens. Remember, Hannah prayed without sound, yet heaven heard her cry (1 Samuel 1:13).
🔥 4. Understand This: You Are Not the One Praying
When you pray in the Spirit, it is not your mind, your flesh, or even your emotions leading—it is the Spirit of God in you praying through you.
“…for we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” — Romans 8:26
You carry an altar within. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). You can be walking, talking, and interacting—and still be in prayer. Different faculties. Different realms.
You may be talking to people outwardly, yet your spirit is praying inwardly. These do not conflict—because prayer is a function of the heart, not the lips.
🔥 5. Your Past Prayers Are Not Lost
The prayer you see answered today may not be the one you prayed this morning, but the seeds of prayer you sowed yesterday.
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” — James 5:16
The prayers you prayed yesterday, last week, or even years ago are still active in the spirit.
Prayer is seed. And like seed, some answers grow instantly; others take time.
“Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.” — Ecclesiastes 11:1
Prayer builds momentum. Don’t stop when answers delay—God is storing them until His perfect time.
Don’t give up. The harvest of your past prayers may be the very thing sustaining you today.
🔥 6. Prayer Has a Language — The Word of God
True prayer is built on Scripture. The more of God’s Word in your heart, the more effective your prayers become.
Every prayer that moves God is loaded with Scripture. Jesus prayed, “It is written…” (Matthew 4:4). If prayer is not filled with the Word, it is just noise.
Prophet TB Joshua taught:
“Scriptural prayer releases God’s power to heal, deliver, bless and save.”
When you pray, quote the Word:
For healing → “By His stripes I am healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
For provision → “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).
For strength → “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” — John 15:7
The Word of God is the language of the Spirit. If your heart is full of the Word, your prayer will always have fire.
💎 More Practical Ways to Pray in the Spirit
🔑 Meditation Before Prayer
Meditation prepares the heart. Prophet TB Joshua said:
“Meditate until you receive clear light to pray.”
🔑 Obedience After Prayer
Prayer without obedience is empty. Jesus said, “If you love Me, obey My commands” (John 14:15).
🔑 Forgiveness in Prayer
Unforgiveness blocks prayer (Mark 11:25). A free heart attracts the Holy Spirit.
🔑 Pause often: Don’t rush prayer. Allow God to respond.
🔑 Worship deeply: A Spirit-filled song is a prayer by itself.
🔑 Let silence speak: Just bask in His presence sometimes. Words are not always necessary.
💬 Prophet TB Joshua’s Insight on Spirit Prayer
“When you open your lips to pray, you should know you are not the one praying. The Spirit prays through you. Just make your heart available.”
— Prophet TB Joshua
This is why genuine humility, brokenness, and surrender are the best spiritual postures before God.
Prayer is not performance; it is presence.
🌿 Finally People of God,
To pray in the Spirit is to live in constant connection with God:
Thanksgiving in the morning,
Meditation in the day,
Silent petitions in your heart,
Scripture on your lips,
Obedience in your actions,
Gratitude at night.
Then you will see prayer not as an event, but as a lifestyle.
- Don’t wait for perfect conditions to pray.
- Don’t wait for church to connect to God.
- Don’t wait to feel holy before you pray.
“The Holy Spirit does not come to perfect people; He comes to people who are sincerely available.”
— Prophet TB Joshua
🛐 A Spirit Prayer You Can Say Right Now
“Lord Jesus, take more of me and give me more of You.
Make my heart Your dwelling place.
Let Your Spirit lead me in prayer, in life, and in worship.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
