To Conquer, Your Spirit Must Govern Your Senses

Galatians 5:16–25, 2 Corinthians 5:7, Hebrews 11:1, John 11:40, Romans 8:5–6

🌱 Introduction: The Inner War We Must All Win

“The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other…” — Galatians 5:17

The greatest battlefield of the believer is not outside—it’s within. The war is between the spirit and the senses. If your senses rule you—what you see, feel, taste, touch—you will live by reaction (feelings and emotions). But if your spirit governs, you will live by revelation.

To govern your senses, you must feed your spirit with the Word of God daily. Meditate on His promises, pray without ceasing, and align your thoughts with His truth. The Holy Spirit empowers you to overcome the desires of the flesh and walk in obedience to God’s will.

Remember, victory begins with surrender—surrendering your will to God and allowing Him to lead. When your spirit is in control, you will experience peace, joy, and the abundant life that Jesus promised.

To live in victory, your spirit must govern your senses. This is not optional—it is essential.

🌱 What Are the Senses?

Your senses refer to your natural, emotional, and physical faculties—what you see, hear, feel, taste, and touch. These are not inherently bad, but they are limited and easily manipulated by the environment and Satan’s lies.

  • Your senses react to pressure.

  • Your senses obey feelings.

  • Your senses follow popular opinion.

  • Your senses are driven by fear.

And Satan knows this.

“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6

✨ What Does It Mean to Be Spirit-Governed?

To be Spirit-governed means your decisions are led by God’s Word, not by how you feel or what you see.

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” — Galatians 5:25

A Spirit-led believer walks by revelation, not by reaction. This is the foundation of faith.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

The Word Must Renew the Mind

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” — Romans 12:2

We have many listeners of the Word, eloquent talkers of the Word, and even passionate confessors—but few doers.

  • Hearing the Word alone doesn’t transform.

  • Speaking the Word alone doesn’t renew.

  • Living the Word—that’s where the power is.

“Faith without works is dead.” — James 2:26

You don’t grow spiritually by studying only—you grow by doing. Revelation knowledge comes not just by hearing, but by acting on what you’ve heard.

Walk by Faith, Not by Sight

“If you believe, you will see…” — John 11:40 “We walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

“The thing that keeps us from despairing is not what we see, but what we believe.” — Psalm 27:13

In the natural world, we see before we believe. In the kingdom of God, we believe first—then we see.

The Christian walk is against the senses.

🌿 The Senses Say vs. The Spirit Says

Your Senses Say The Spirit Says
“It’s impossible.” “With God, all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26
“It’s over.” “He who began a good work will finish it.” — Philippians 1:6
“I need proof first.” “Faith is the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1
“Show me proof.” “I believe because God said it.” — Philippians 1:6
“I’m afraid.” “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
“I’m weak.” “His strength is made perfect in my weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
“I’m alone.” “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5
“I can’t.” “I can do all things through Christ…” — Philippians 4:13

This is why Paul said in Galatians 5:18–23 that the flesh wars against the Spirit—they are in constant opposition.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

Faith is not a feeling; it’s a decision to trust God even when circumstances seem contrary. Walking by faith means choosing to believe in God’s promises over the evidence of your senses.

  • Faith sees beyond the natural.

  • Faith declares victory before it manifests.

  • Faith rests in God’s sovereignty.

When you walk by faith, you align yourself with God’s perspective, allowing His power to work through you. Trust Him, even when you don’t understand, and He will direct your path.

🌱 Why This Battle Matters

A believer ruled by senses will always struggle to obey God fully.

“Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.” — Romans 8:8

But a believer ruled by the Spirit will find:

  • Clarity in confusion

  • Peace in pressure

  • Victory in trials

  • Guidance in uncertainty

“If you believe, you will see the glory of God.” — John 11:40

Notice Jesus didn’t say “see, then believe.” He reversed the world’s logic. In God’s Kingdom, you believe first, then you see.

✨ How to Strengthen Your Spirit Over Your Senses

1. Practice Meditation Daily

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” — Colossians 3:16

Spend quiet moments meditating on scripture. Turn verses over and over in your heart. This helps your spirit dominate when the senses react.

2. Obey Quickly

“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” — Isaiah 1:19

The more you delay obedience, the louder your senses will scream. Train your heart to obey instantly.

3. Watch Your Confessions

“The power of life and death is in the tongue.” — Proverbs 18:21

If your words reflect fear and doubt, your senses are in control. Speak faith—especially when you feel afraid.

4. Fast Regularly

Fasting disciplines the body so that the spirit can ascend. It weakens the senses and strengthens spiritual authority.

5. Avoid Sensual Triggers

Cut off media and environments that overly stimulate your senses. Movies, music, gossip, and carnal conversations can dull your spirit.

Prophet TB Joshua once said:
“The greatest conflict is between faith and the senses. You must decide who is in charge—your faith or your feelings.”

🔥 Final Takeaway

You cannot live the supernatural life with a sense-ruled mind. Every great man and woman of faith in Scripture had to conquer this inner war.

  • Abraham left without knowing where he was going.

  • Moses turned aside from the palace to hear a voice in the bush.

  • Jesus, tempted in every way, answered only with the Word.

Faith is not a feeling; it’s a decision.
Faith is not sight; it’s obedience.
Faith is not about control; it’s about surrender.

Your destiny is spiritual, so your decisions must be spiritual too.

🙏 Prayer of Submission

Lord Jesus, I surrender my senses to Your Spirit. Help me crucify the desires of the flesh and live by faith. I choose to walk by what You say, not what I see. Fill me with Your Spirit. Govern my thoughts, my emotions, and my will. Let me be led by revelation and not reaction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
