Seek God Before Challenges Arise

Desperation
Trials
Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

Do not wait for challenges before you remember God

Key Scriptures: 1 Kings 14:1-18, Proverbs 8:17, Isaiah 55:6-7, Matthew 6:33, James 4:8, Psalm 50:15

Why Do Many Only Seek God in Times of Trouble?

Many people turn to God only when they are desperate—when sickness, financial crises, failures, or other life challenges strike. They try every human solution first, and when nothing works, they remember God.

However, God wants us to seek Him daily, not just when we are in trouble.

📖 Proverbs 8:17
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me early shall find me.”

📖 Isaiah 55:6-7
“Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”

We must not wait until life pushes us to our knees before we remember to seek God.

The Mistake of Seeking God with the Wrong Motives

Some people seek God’s help only to solve their immediate problems, not because they truly want to have a relationship with Him. They think they can use their material possessions—money, gifts, or sacrifices—to buy God’s favor.

📖 Psalm 50:12-15
“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it… Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

God is not moved by gifts without a genuine heart. He owns everything—He does not need our money, offerings, or sacrifices if our hearts are far from Him. What He desires is genuine repentance, humility, and faith.

📖 James 4:8
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

King Jeroboam’s Hypocrisy: Seeking God in Desperation

📖 1 Kings 14:1-18

King Jeroboam was a man who once heard directly from a true prophet of God, Ahijah. When he was first chosen as king, God gave him an opportunity to rule well. However, instead of worshiping the true God, he turned to idols, leading Israel into sin.

But when his son became sick, he remembered the same prophet he once ignored. Instead of seeking God sincerely, he sent his wife in disguise, thinking he could trick the prophet into giving him a favorable answer.

However, God sees beyond our disguises.

📖 1 Samuel 16:7
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Even before the queen arrived, God revealed everything to the prophet. Jeroboam thought he could fool God, but the answer was already decided.

💡 Lesson:
Your crisis will not change God’s truth. If you reject Him in good times, do not expect Him to be at your service only in times of trouble.

The Right Way to Seek God: A Heart of True Worship

📖 Matthew 6:33
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”

God wants us to seek Him:
✔️ Before trouble comes, not just in crisis
✔️ With a sincere heart, not just for material gain
✔️ With faith and obedience, not manipulation

Other examples of people who sought God early and were rewarded:

  • Daniel (Daniel 6:10-23) – Prayed daily even when life was good, so when trials came, he was already spiritually strong.

  • David (Psalm 27:4) – Desired to dwell in God’s presence always, not just in battle.

  • Abraham (Genesis 12:1-4, 22:1-18) – Obeyed God even when it was hard, and he was called a friend of God (James 2:23).

Final Warning: Seek God Now Before It’s Too Late

📖 Psalm 32:6
“Therefore, let all the godly pray to You while there is still time, that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.”

If you wait until challenges come, you might miss the opportunity to receive God’s mercy.

✅ Seek God today with a genuine heart.
✅ Don’t wait for a crisis before praying.
✅ Serve God because you love Him, not just because you need help.

📖 “Lord, teach me to seek You daily, not just when I am in trouble. Help me love You with all my heart. Amen.”
