Meditation in the Word of God: The Key to Good Success
In Joshua 1:8, God commands Joshua (and us) to meditate on His Word day and night:
“This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
This Scripture is not only about success, but good success. There is a distinction between the two. While many people achieve success through hard work, the real question is, is it good success? Good success comes from God, and it is a result of meditating on His Word, observing His instructions, and living in His presence.
If you are succeeding without meditating on the Word of God, it is only success by human standards, not the good success that God promises. The secret to good success lies in meditating on God’s Word day and night, allowing it to shape your thoughts, words, and actions.
What is Meditation in the Word of God?
Meditation is the practice of the presence of Jesus. It is the act of thinking deeply, silently, and consistently on His Word. It is not just about reading Scripture but letting the Word of God penetrate your heart and mind.
Meditation leads the spirit and soul into the heights of God’s presence. It is a visit with God. Unlike spoken prayer, meditation is the deep, silent practice of engaging with God’s Word. This is how we align ourselves with Him, understand His will, and prepare our hearts to receive from Him.
To meditate is to practice the presence of Jesus. When done consistently, it transforms your life. It trains your spirit to do things for God effortlessly, brings clarity, and draws you closer to Him.
Why Meditation Comes Before Prayer
Many Christians pray without first meditating on God’s Word, but meditation must come first.
Meditation ushers us into the presence of God. It prepares our hearts, clears obstacles like bitterness and anger, and allows us to access God’s realm. Prayer that follows meditation is powerful and effective because it is inspired by the Holy Spirit.
If you skip meditation, your prayers may lack direction, power, and spiritual backing. Romans 8:26-27 says, “We do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Without meditating, how can you allow the Holy Spirit to guide your prayers?
Meditation is how you discover God’s presence, receive His language, and experience His revelation. It clears your path and allows you to pray with authority and understanding.
Meditation: A Spiritual Journey
Meditation in the Word of God is a journey. It takes effort, discipline, and consistency to engage in this practice.
Meditation Draws Us Closer to God
Meditation clears the obstacles on our path—anger, bitterness, fear, and doubt—and draws us into God’s presence. As you meditate, the Word of God comes alive in you, and you sense His presence around you.Meditation Reveals God’s Mysteries
Meditation penetrates the hidden mysteries of God, giving you access to His visions and dreams. It allows you to hear His voice and receive guidance for your life. Dreams that are born out of meditation are clear, divine, and come to pass because they are from God.Meditation Strengthens Faith
Meditation keeps your faith active and alive, even during trials and temptations. It equips you with the grace and strength you need to endure challenges.Meditation Brings God’s Grace in Abundance
Through meditation, we draw God’s grace, much like withdrawing from a spiritual bank. While many Christians live with “ATM Christianity,” receiving limited blessings, meditation allows you to access abundant grace—beyond limits.Meditation Prepares You Spiritually
Meditation trains your heart and mind to focus on God. It disciplines you to make your heart your servant, not your master. It teaches you to control negative thoughts, fear, and lust, replacing them with the Word of God.
Practical Steps to Meditate on the Word of God
Start Small
Begin by meditating on simple words like, “Oh Lord, locate me in Your mercy; locate me in Your favor.” Repeat these words in your heart throughout the day.Use Scripture
Reflect on verses like Psalm 19:14:
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
Allow your thoughts and words to align with God’s truth.Engage in Worship
Worship in your heart by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19-20). This takes your meditation deeper and draws you into God’s presence.Consistency is Key
Meditation is a habit. Practice it daily, hourly, and even minute by minute. If you forget, ask the Holy Spirit to forgive you and start again. It must become part of your lifestyle.Meditate Before You Pray
Never rush into prayer without meditating first. Take time to clear your heart and mind, usher yourself into God’s presence, and then pray with faith and authority.
Benefits of Meditation
Access to God’s Presence
Meditation takes you into God’s presence. You begin to sense His presence and hear His voice clearly.Clarity in Dreams and Visions
Meditation ensures that the dreams and visions you receive are from God, not influenced by the enemy.Power and Authority
When you meditate and pray, your words carry spiritual authority. This allows you to overcome obstacles, resist the enemy, and live victoriously.Preparation for Trials
Meditation equips you to face challenges with confidence. You live with the assurance that God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).Discipline and Focus
Meditation disciplines your heart and mind, making them your servant, not your master. You learn to focus on God rather than distractions.
A Disciplined Life of Meditation
To live this life, you need discipline. You must train your heart and mind to stay focused on God. Instead of allowing your thoughts to wander, bring them back to God’s Word.
Before you sleep, spend at least two hours meditating. Prepare your spirit for the spiritual journey of sleep. Avoid distractions like food, entertainment, or cell phones that draw you away from God’s presence.
Conclusion: The Secret of Good Success
Good success is not about worldly achievements, wealth, or status. It is about living in God’s presence, guided by His Word, and empowered by His Spirit. To achieve this, you must meditate on the Word of God day and night, as instructed in Joshua 1:8.
Meditation is not an easy exercise, but if pursued faithfully and consistently, it works in a subtle yet powerful way in your soul and spirit. It produces wonders, draws God’s grace abundantly, and leads to good success.
Meditate until you receive a clear light. Meditate until you sense God’s presence. This is the only way to live victoriously as a child of God.
“Lord, locate me in Your mercy. Locate me in Your favor.”
“Holy Spirit, take more of me and give me more of You.”
These words, spoken in meditation, will transform your life and draw you into the realm of God. Whatever you touch will prosper, and you will walk in good success.
Let us discipline ourselves to meditate day and night. As Moses said, “If Your presence does not go with us, we are not going anywhere.”
