What Should I do When I Fall Into Sin
When You Fall Into Sin, Run to God, Not Away
Psalm 119:11
As Christians, we are not perfect. At times, we may fall into sin. But when this happens, the worst thing we can do is run away from God out of guilt and shame. Instead, we should run to Him, confess our sins, and seek His forgiveness.
What to Do When You Sin
1️⃣ Run to God, Not Away
Don’t let guilt or shame keep you away from God’s presence.
1 John 1:9 says: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to purify us from all unrighteousness.”
God is a loving Father who is eager to forgive and restore us when we repent.
2️⃣ Deal With Negative Thoughts
- After praying for forgiveness, you might find your mind replaying the sin or mistake you made. This is the enemy trying to trap you in guilt.
How to overcome negative thoughts:
Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
Replace those negative thoughts with the Word of God by meditating on Scripture.
The more of God’s Word you take into your heart, the less room there is for guilt and shame to take hold.
3️⃣ Don’t Let Guilt Destroy Your Peace
Guilt, if left unchecked, becomes a tool for satan to accuse you before God and afflict you.
Revelation 12:10 calls satan the “accuser of the brethren.”
If you dwell on guilt, it can open doors to spiritual or physical affliction, leading to addiction or a hardened heart.
Sin and Fellowship with God
Prophet T.B. Joshua explains:
- “A Christian can make a bad mistake, but the difference between us and others is that we always want to be forgiven each time we sin, and the guilt of our sin will not let us rest until we ask and receive forgiveness.”
When a Christian sins:
Fellowship with God is broken: Sin creates a barrier between us and the promises of God. It spoils the comfort of His grace and hinders the success of our prayers.
- Isaiah 59:2: “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.”
But you do not lose your place as God’s child:
Your position as a son or daughter of God remains intact. Your “seat” is still there. All you need to do is realize your wrong, confess it, and turn away from it.
Romans 8:1: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Breaking Free from Sin’s Power
When we sin repeatedly, it can become an addiction or a stronghold in our lives. But as Christians, we have victory over sin through Jesus Christ.
Declare Victory Over Sin
Romans 6:11: “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
Speak to the sin: “Sin’s power over me—be broken, in Jesus’ name!”
Rely on the Holy Spirit
Prophet T.B. Joshua says: “Oh Holy Spirit, help me to do what is right at all times, even if it is contrary to what I naturally want to do.”
The Holy Spirit is your Helper, empowering you to live in righteousness even when it’s difficult.
Confess and Forsake Sin
Proverbs 28:13: “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
Don’t just confess your sins—turn away from them and ask for God’s help to avoid returning to them.
Key Reminders
Your Guilt Should Drive You to God, Not Away
- Let guilt prompt you to seek forgiveness, not condemnation.
Sin Spoils Fellowship, Not Sonship
- Sin disrupts your fellowship with God, but it does not cancel your identity as His child.
The Word of God Is Your Weapon
- Meditate on Scripture daily to renew your mind and guard your heart against sin.
God Is Always Ready to Forgive
- He does not reject those who come to Him with a humble and repentant heart.
PRAYER
I was baptized into Christ and I died when He died, sin’s power over me - be broken, in Jesus’ name! Oh Holy Spirit, help me to do what is right at all times, even if it is contrary to what I naturally want to do.
