Matthew 5:13-16: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Genesis 39:2–5: Joseph brought prosperity and favor to Potiphar’s household through God’s blessing on him.
Genesis 30:27–30: Laban recognized that God had blessed him because of Jacob.

What Does It Mean to Be the Salt of the Earth?
🌱 Salt Adds Flavor
To be the salt of the earth means to bring value, flavor, and impact wherever you go. Salt improves the taste of food, and as Christians, we are called to improve the “taste” of life in the world.
When you live as the salt of the earth, you make an otherwise uninteresting, unattractive, or difficult situation better because of the Christ in you.
- Matthew 5:13 challenges us not to lose our saltiness:
“If the salt loses its saltiness, it is no longer good for anything.”
As believers, our “saltiness” is our ability to influence the world positively for Christ.

Being salt means bringing added value to any place you find yourself—whether it’s your home, workplace, classroom, or community.

- Genesis 39:2–5 tells us that Joseph brought added value to Potiphar’s household:

Joseph’s presence brought blessings, success, and favor to Potiphar.
Biblical Example: Jacob
- In Genesis 30:27–30, Laban acknowledged that God had blessed him because of Jacob:
“I have become wealthy, for the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
Jacob brought tangible benefits to Laban’s household through his hard work, diligence, and divine favor.

“The king said to Daniel, ‘Truly, your God is the greatest of gods, the Lord over kings, a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this secret.’”- Daniel’s conduct and divine gifts brought light to the king’s situation, earning him recognition and favor.

How to Be Salt and Light in Everyday Life
1️⃣ At Your Workplace or School
Be diligent and hardworking, knowing that your efforts will bring blessings and success to the organization.
Let your integrity and honesty stand out, even when others cut corners.
Example: Just as Joseph blessed Potiphar’s household and Jacob brought prosperity to Laban, your presence in your workplace or school should bring added value.
2️⃣ In Your Community
Be a positive influence, showing love, kindness, and generosity.
Reflect Christ in how you treat others, especially the vulnerable and needy.
3️⃣ In Your Character
Strive to live a life that reflects Christ’s values.
Avoid behaviors that compromise your testimony as a Christian.
4️⃣ In Your Speech
Speak words that build up, encourage, and bring hope.
Avoid gossip, negativity, or harmful speech.
A Warning Against Losing Saltiness and Hiding Your Light
Don’t Lose Your Saltiness: If you compromise your faith, conform to worldly standards, or neglect your walk with God, you risk becoming “unsalty,” losing your ability to influence others for Christ.
Don’t Hide Your Light: Fear, shame, or complacency can cause you to hide your light. But Jesus calls us to shine brightly so that others can see the Christ in us and be drawn to God.

🙏 Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Help me to bring added value wherever I go, to reflect Your character in my actions, and to bless those around me with Your presence. Strengthen me to never lose my saltiness or hide my light. May my life glorify You and lead others to know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
