Why are you still dwelling on your unworthy past when God does not

Each time we want to focus on our future, satan is there to remind us of our unworthy past in order to provoke our guilt and tarnish our future thereby.

Why are you still dwelling on your unworthy past when God does not?

Exodus 3:1-12, James 4:7, Matthew 12:2, Luke 9:62, Hebrews 8:12

God’s Grace Is Greater Than Your Past

If God had chosen works over grace, no one would have merited His mercy. But in His infinite love, God chose grace so that no one is disqualified from His redemption.

Consider Moses: He was a murderer, yet God looked at him and saw a deliverer. This shows us that no one is too good or too bad to qualify for God’s grace.

Jesus Christ came to put an end to your unworthy past and give birth to a glorious future. He does not define you by your past mistakes but by His love and purpose for your life.

Satan: The Accuser of the Brethren

The Bible describes satan as our accuser. Revelation 12:10 says:
“For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.”

Satan’s primary goal is to derail you from your God-given destiny. He reminds you of your unworthy past to:

  • Provoke guilt

  • Tarnish your confidence

  • Distract you from focusing on your future

But remember, Romans 8:1 declares:
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

When Jesus forgives you, your past is erased. God remembers your sins no more (Hebrews 8:12). So, why should you?

Jesus Calls You to Look Forward

Jesus does not want you to look back. He knows that looking back is a trap of satan—a way to keep you stuck in regret and shame. Instead, He calls you to be forward-looking.

Luke 9:62 says:
“No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Looking back only hinders your progress. Like Lot’s wife in Genesis 19, when you keep looking back, you risk turning into a “pillar of salt”—stuck, immobile, and unable to move forward into the life God has prepared for you.

God’s Message to You: Face Forward

Child of God, it is time to:

  1. Stop dwelling on the past: Let go of the guilt and shame satan tries to burden you with.

  2. Face your front: Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).

  3. Move forward: Embrace the future God has planned for you, knowing His plans are to prosper you and give you hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

How to Resist the Temptation of Looking Back

  1. Focus on God’s Word
“May God’s Word abide in you and you abide in it.” Meditate daily on Scriptures that remind you of your identity in Christ and His promises for your future.

  2. Remember God’s Grace
Reflect on how far God has brought you. His grace covers every sin, every mistake, and every failure. You are forgiven and made new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  3. Resist the Devil
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). When satan reminds you of your past, remind him of his future—he has already been defeated by the blood of Jesus!

  4. Surround Yourself with Encouragement
Be in the company of people who speak life and encourage you to focus on God’s promises rather than your past.
