What Does Jesus Really Mean When He Said, “Keep on Seeking, and You Will Find”?

Matthew 7:7

Key Scripture:
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”Matthew 7:7

What Does “Keep on Seeking” Really Mean?

“Keep on seeking” in Matthew 7:7 implies a continuous, deliberate effort on our part to draw closer to God and live righteously. It’s not about casually looking for blessings or material possessions but about persistently pursuing a relationship with God.

🌱 Seeking Is About Relationship:
The focus of this verse is on seeking God first—loving Him, obeying Him, and putting Him above everything else in our lives.

Matthew 6:33:
“Seek first the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”

How Do We Seek God?

1️⃣ Obey His Commands

  • Seeking God means striving to live according to His Word.

  • James 1:22: “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

  • John 14:21: “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.”

2️⃣ Be Humble

  • God draws close to those who humble themselves before Him.

  • James 4:6–8: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”

3️⃣ Worship Him in Spirit and Truth

  • John 4:24: “For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Where Can We Find God?

Luke 5:16 shows us an example from Jesus:
“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.”

🌿 God Is Found in Quiet and Uncommon Places

  • Jesus retreated to the wilderness—a place of discomfort, away from the distractions of the city—to seek the Father.

  • Similarly, finding God often requires us to step out of our comfort zones.

Examples from Scripture:

  • Ezra 8:21,23: The people fasted and humbled themselves by the river, seeking God’s guidance.

  • Exodus 34:28: Moses sought God through fasting and communion on Mount Sinai.

  • Psalm 69:10: Fasting and humility as acts of seeking God.

  • Matthew 4:1–2: Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before beginning His ministry.

Why the Wilderness?

The wilderness symbolizes:
1️⃣ A Place of Discomfort

  • The flesh resists discomfort, but it’s often in these places of denial (fasting, prayer, solitude) that God reveals Himself.

  • Seeking God may mean waking up early, sacrificing pleasures, or quieting your busy schedule to commune with Him.

2️⃣ A Place of Focus

  • Away from the noise and distractions of life, the wilderness allows us to fix our thoughts on God.

  • Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

3️⃣ A Place of Spiritual Encounter

  • Many of God’s servants, including Moses, Elijah, and Jesus, encountered Him in solitude and fasting.

What Are You Really Seeking?

Jesus’ command to “keep on seeking” is not focused on material needs. Instead, it’s about making God your priority.

Matthew 6:25–34 reminds us:

  • Don’t worry about material things (what you will eat, drink, or wear).

  • God already knows your needs before you ask.

  • When you seek God first, these things will naturally follow.

Practical Steps to Seek God First

1️⃣ Set Aside Time Daily for God

  • Create a consistent time for prayer, meditation, and studying the Bible.

  • Retreat to a quiet place like Jesus did to focus solely on God.

2️⃣ Prioritize His Word

  • Meditate on Scriptures that reveal His promises and commandments.

  • Let His Word guide your thoughts and actions.

3️⃣ Practice Fasting and Self-Denial

  • Set aside time to fast and deny your fleshly desires so your spirit can connect with God.

  • Let fasting be a way to humble yourself before Him, seeking His will.

4️⃣ Live Righteously

  • Seeking God is not just about prayer but also about aligning your daily actions with His will.

  • Strive for humility, love, patience, and obedience.

5️⃣ Trust God for Your Needs

  • As you seek God first, trust that He will take care of your material needs, just as He promises in Matthew 6:33.

Key Takeaway

Jesus’ words, “Keep on seeking, and you will find,” remind us that:

  • Seeking God is a continuous journey, not a one-time event.

  • It requires effort, humility, and a willingness to leave your comfort zone.

  • When you seek Him first, He takes care of all your needs—spiritual and material.

Prayer

🙏 Lord Jesus, help me to seek You first in everything I do. Teach me to prioritize my relationship with You above all else. Grant me the humility to obey Your commands and the discipline to spend time in Your presence daily. Let my heart yearn for You, and may my life reflect Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Encouragement

Child of God, the world is filled with distractions, but don’t lose sight of what truly matters—your relationship with the Father. Keep seeking Him with all your heart, and you will find Him in ways that will transform your life.
