What Does Jesus Mean by “Keep on Asking, and You Will Receive What You Ask For”?

Matthew 7:7

Key Scripture:
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”Matthew 7:7

What Does “Keep on Asking” Really Mean?

When Jesus says, “Keep on asking,” He is emphasizing persistence in prayer and unwavering faith in God. This instruction acknowledges that:

  • The process of asking will require effort from you and me.

  • Our faith will be tested as we continue to trust Him while waiting for His response.

Key Truths Behind “Keep on Asking”

1️⃣ Your Faith Will Be Tested

  • In the process of asking, challenges will arise to test your faith in God. These challenges might come in the form of:

    • Doubt

    • Worry

    • Anxiety

  • You may even begin to wonder if your prayer will be answered, but Jesus encourages us to remain steadfast.

2️⃣ Spiritual Opposition Will Come

  • Asking God is not always a smooth process because we live in a spiritual battlefield.

  • Ephesians 6:12 reminds us: “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

  • These forces often use arrows like:

    • Doubt

    • Offense

    • Worry

    • Fear

  • These are the arrows David referred to in Psalm 91:5–6:
“You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day.”

  • These spiritual forces aim to weaken your faith and make you abandon your prayers.

3️⃣ Delays Are Not Denials

  • Sometimes, there is a delay in receiving the answers to our prayers. This is not because God doesn’t hear us but because there is a spiritual process taking place.

  • Remember Daniel in Daniel 10:

    • Daniel prayed and fasted for 21 days, but the answer to his prayer was delayed due to a spiritual battle between God’s angels and the prince of Persia (a demonic force).

    • When the angel finally came, he said: “Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them” (Daniel 10:12).

  • This means God hears your prayers the very moment you pray, but sometimes spiritual warfare causes delays.

Why Did Jesus Say “Keep on Asking”?

Jesus understood the spiritual realities we would face when making requests to God:

1️⃣ To Strengthen Your Faith

  • Asking repeatedly keeps you connected to God, relying on Him rather than yourself.

2️⃣ To Teach You Patience and Trust

  • Delays teach us to trust God’s timing, which is always perfect.

  • Isaiah 40:31: “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.”

3️⃣ To Overcome the Enemy’s Resistance

  • Persistent prayer is a weapon that helps us overcome the arrows of doubt, fear, and worry that Satan throws at us.

  • Ephesians 6:10: “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”

How Should We Respond When the Answer Seems Delayed?

1️⃣ Trust God’s Faithfulness

  • Even when it seems like nothing is happening, trust that God is working behind the scenes for your good.

  • Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.”

2️⃣ Pray and Fast the More

  • Follow Daniel’s example. When the answer didn’t come immediately, he prayed and fasted more intensely until the breakthrough came.

3️⃣ Resist the Devil’s Arrows

  • Stand firm against the devil’s tactics of discouragement and fear.

  • James 4:7: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

4️⃣ Keep Knocking, Keep Believing

  • Don’t give up. Keep asking and keep trusting, knowing that God’s timing is perfect.

What Are You Asking For?

Jesus’ command to “keep on asking” is not just about material things—it’s about aligning your heart with God’s will.

  • Matthew 6:33 reminds us: “Seek first the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”

  • When you focus on seeking God’s kingdom, He will take care of your every need.

Prayer

🙏 Heavenly Father, I thank You for hearing me every time I pray. Strengthen my faith as I continue to ask, seek, and knock. Help me to resist doubt, fear, and worry, and remind me that Your timing is always perfect. Teach me to trust You in the waiting and to persist in prayer, knowing that Your answers are for my good and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
