HOW TO DEAL WITH EVIL DESIRES

Psalm 119:11, Proverbs 4:23, 1 Corinthians 15:33, Mahew 5:29-30, Luke 11:54, Joshua 1:8, Phillipians 4:8


You are not made holy just because you go to church; you are holy because you hear and obey God’s Word.

📖 Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”
📖 Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”


Steps to Overcome Evil Desires:

1️⃣ Cut Off Negative Influences

Stop keeping company with people who are not prayerful.

  • They will demoralize you, cripple your faith, and keep you from living a holy life.
    📖 1 Corinthians 15:33: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”

2️⃣ Remove Triggers of Sin

“If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.”

  • Jesus was using hyperbole in Matthew 5:29–30 to emphasize the seriousness of sin. Remove anything that leads you into temptation.

    👉 Avoid people, places, or activities that entice you into sinful behavior.

📖 Luke 11:54: “They were watching Him to catch Him in something He might say.” Be mindful of the thoughts you entertain, as nurturing sin gives Satan access to manipulate you.


3️⃣ Cultivate Good Spiritual Habits

Use every proper means to build yourself spiritually and protect your heart.
Meditate on God’s Word before you sleep.

  • Let the last thing you do be reading or thinking about His Word. You know when you go to bed, but only God knows when you’ll fall asleep.
    📖 Psalm 1:2: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.”

Listen to worship music, sermons, or teachings as you wake up.

  • Start your day in God’s presence to guide your thoughts and steps.

Read your Bible every morning, slowly, repeatedly, and attentively.

  • Spend quality time with the Word, allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal deeper truths.
    📖 Joshua 1:8: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.”

Watch Christian programs.

  • Choose uplifting, God-centered content that builds your faith and inspires godly living.

4️⃣ Avoid Feeding Your Spirit with Negativity

⚠️ Don’t start your day with bad news.

  • News programs are often filled with negativity and gossip that can weigh down your spirit.

  • Instead, save such updates for the end of the day, and turn the bad news you hear into prayer points.

📖 Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”


Why These Steps Are Important

  • If you nurture sin in your heart, it becomes a doorway for Satan to gain a secure position in your life.

  • Without spiritual discipline, it’s easy to fall into patterns of sin and compromise.

Prayer for Strength Against Evil Desires

🙏 Lord Jesus, I confess and surrender my weaknesses before You. Sanctify my heart and mind. Give me the grace to stand firm in Your Word, to avoid evil, and to build habits that glorify You. Help me to guard my heart and live a life that pleases You, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
