The Importance of Living in God’s Word

Matthew 15:8–9, Colossians 3:16, John 15:7

Neglecting God’s Word Keeps Your Heart Far From Him

In Matthew 15:8–9, Jesus said:
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.”

God is deeply interested in the state of our heart because it is the dwelling place of His Spirit. For our heart to be aligned with God’s will, it must be in perfect fellowship with the Living Word. Neglecting to study and meditate on the Bible separates us from God, as His Word is the foundation of our spiritual life and connection to Him.

The Spirit of God expresses Himself through our heart, but for this to happen, we must be spiritual. Spirituality is not about outward appearances but about letting God’s Word live in us and govern our lives.

Living in Harmony with the Word

The Bible teaches us in Colossians 3:16:
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

For the Word of God to dwell richly in us:

  1. Read Slowly and Repeatedly
Meditating on Scripture means taking it in slowly, attentively, and with an open heart. The more you read, the more the Holy Spirit reveals its meaning and power to you.

  2. Read with Forgiveness
To experience the transformative power of God’s Word, your heart must be free of grudges, bitterness, and unforgiveness. Only a pure heart can truly absorb and reflect the Word of God.

  3. Allow the Word to Rule Your Spirit
As you meditate on Scripture, Christ builds His nature into you. His Word begins to rule, dominate, and sanctify your spirit, shaping you to reflect His character in your daily life.

Jesus said in John 15:7:
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
Remaining in Christ and letting His Word remain in us is the key to a fruitful and victorious Christian life.

The Transformative Power of God’s Word

When you immerse yourself in the Word of God:

  • God’s Nature is Built Into You: As you meditate on the Word, Christ Himself builds His character within you, transforming your thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors.

  • Your Heart Aligns with God’s Will: The more you live in the Word, the more your heart will be in harmony with God’s plans and purposes.

  • Your Spirit Becomes Sanctified: God’s Word purifies and sanctifies your spirit, making you a vessel for His glory.

Prayer

“Lord Jesus, help me to value Your Word above all else. Teach me to meditate on it slowly, attentively, and with forgiveness in my heart. Let Your Word dwell in me richly and sanctify my spirit, so I may live in harmony with You. Amen.”
