How Is Your Prayer Life?

1 Peter 5:6, James 4:10, Matthew 6:7-8

Are You Humble in Prayer?

When you approach God in prayer, do you do so with humility, or do you find yourself instructing Him? Many prayers today are filled with demands, rooted in pride rather than surrender.

Humility in prayer is about acknowledging God’s sovereignty, wisdom, and goodness. He knows our needs even before we ask, as Jesus said in Matthew 6:7-8:
“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”

When we come to God with a heart of pride, insisting on our way, we act as if we know better than Him. Imagine a pen telling the writer, “My ink is finished.” It’s absurd! God, the Creator, knows everything about us and our situations.

Why Humility in Prayer Matters

  1. God Opposes the Proud but Gives Grace to the Humble

    • 1 Peter 5:6 reminds us:
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”

    • Pride blocks our prayers, while humility opens the door for God’s grace and mercy.

  2. Humility Aligns Us with God’s Will

    • True humility in prayer says, “Lord, Your will be done,” rather than demanding our own way.

    • Jesus Himself demonstrated this in the Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed:
“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

  3. Prayer Is About Relationship, Not Demands

    • God desires a relationship with us, not a transactional exchange. When we approach Him humbly, we grow closer to Him and align ourselves with His purpose for our lives.

Acknowledge Your Mistakes and Learn Humility in Prayer

If you’ve been approaching prayer with pride, it’s time to acknowledge your mistake and ask God for a heart of humility. Instead of telling God what to do, focus on surrendering to His will and trusting His plan for your life.

A Prayer of Humility by Prophet T.B. Joshua

Let’s pray this powerful prayer together:

*“Take me as I am, O Lord, You can still cleanse me:
Because no one is too good or too bad to qualify for salvation.
All I need is Your mercy and favour.
Dirty as I am, O Lord, You can still cleanse me.
Don’t comfort me until You cleanse me.
Let Your mercy and favour speak for me.
Create a clean heart in me and renew a faithful spirit within me.

O Holy Spirit, Breathe in me, that my thoughts may all be holy.
O Holy Spirit, Act in me, that my work may be holy.
O Holy Spirit, Strengthen me, to defend all that is holy.
O Holy Spirit, Guide me, that I always may be holy. Amen.”*

Final Reflection

Humility in prayer doesn’t mean we can’t express our needs to God, but it means approaching Him with the right heart—one that acknowledges His sovereignty, wisdom, and mercy. Trust in His timing and His plan, and remember: Prayer is not about instructing God but about surrendering to His perfect will.
