Are You Leading Others to Sin or Falling Into Temptation?

Matthew 5:19, Matthew 18:6-7, 1 Corinthians 15:33

A Serious Word for Two Groups of People

This is the Word of Jesus Christ to two groups of people:

  1. Those who lead others into sin

  2. Those who allow themselves to be led into sin

Jesus has a strong warning for both. Ask yourself:

  • Are you the friend who tempts others to sin?

  • Are you the one who repeatedly falls into the sinful traps of your friends?

Group 1: Those Who Lead Others Into Sin

Jesus’ warning in Matthew 5:19 is crystal clear:
“If you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Are you that person who:

  • Lives in disobedience to God’s Word?

  • Spends your dirty money to lead your friends into sin, such as drinking, smoking, lying, fornicating, or clubbing?

  • Fills others’ schedules with distractions so they have no time to reflect on their wrongs and seek God?

  • Blasphemes true men of God and judges their good works?

  • Creates or shares misleading content, like YouTube videos, to mock the things of God?

If you’re guilty of these actions, Jesus has strong words for you:

Matthew 18:6
“But if you cause one of these little ones who trust in Me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the sea.”

This is not a light warning! Jesus refers to those who lead others astray as “the least” because of their destructive influence.

Matthew 18:7 adds:
“What sorrow awaits the world (the least) because it tempts people to sin!”

Leading others into sin is a grievous offense in God’s eyes.

Group 2: Those Who Allow Themselves to Be Led Into Sin

For those who fall into the sinful traps of their friends, Jesus has this instruction:

Matthew 18:8
“If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.”

This doesn’t mean literally cutting off your body parts but rather removing anything—or anyone—that leads you into sin.

  • Do you have friends who tempt you to sin against God?

  • Do they lead you to drink, lie, fornicate, or blaspheme?

  • Do they occupy your time with distractions so you don’t have time to seek God?

1 Corinthians 15:33 warns:
“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”

If you have such bad influences in your life, Jesus says you must cut them off. Why? Because your spiritual life and eternal destiny are far more important than maintaining toxic friendships.

A Call to Repentance for Both Groups

For Those Leading Others Into Sin:

  • Acknowledge your wrongdoing.

  • Repent before God and turn away from your actions.

  • Stop being a stumbling block for others. Instead, help lead them to Christ.

For Those Being Led Into Sin:

  • Recognize the harmful influence of these friends.

  • Cut off relationships that lead you away from God.

  • Surround yourself with people who encourage your walk with Christ.

Practical Steps to Apply This Message

  1. Examine Your Life

    • Are you leading others into sin, or are you allowing others to lead you astray? Be honest with yourself and take responsibility.
  2. Repent and Seek Forgiveness

    • If you’re guilty of leading others into sin, confess your sins to God and ask for His forgiveness. If you’ve been led astray, repent and ask God to help you break free.
  3. Cut Off Harmful Relationships

    • Distance yourself from friends who tempt you to sin. It may be difficult, but your relationship with God is far more important.
  4. Pray for God’s Strength

    • Ask God for the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to surround yourself with godly influences.
  5. Encourage Others in Righteousness

    • If you’ve been a bad influence in the past, commit to being a positive influence moving forward. Lead others toward God, not away from Him.

Prayer

“Lord Jesus, forgive me for any way I have led others into sin or allowed myself to be led astray. Give me the wisdom to discern toxic influences and the courage to cut them off. Help me to live a life that glorifies You and encourages others to walk in righteousness. Create in me a clean heart, and let Your Spirit guide me in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
