Are You Living Your Christian Life the Same Way You Started It?

Psalm 39:5, Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2 Corinthians 6:2

Reflect on This Question: What If You Had Only One Week to Live?

Imagine receiving a revelation from God that you have just one more week to live. How would you spend that week?

Most of us would suddenly focus on what truly matters in life:

Reconciliation

  • You would quickly reconcile with anyone who has hurt you or whom you have hurt.

  • Forgiveness would take priority because you wouldn’t want to leave this world with unresolved grudges.

Letting Go of Materialism

  • You would start giving away the things you cherish because you’d finally realize they can’t go with you.

  • Material possessions would lose their grip on your heart.

Breaking Bad Habits

  • You’d find the strength to stop those bad habits you currently struggle with, knowing time is short.

Drawing Closer to God

  • You’d devote yourself to reading the Bible, praying, and doing God’s will with a sense of urgency.

Focusing on Eternity

  • All your present worries would vanish because you’d see clearly how meaningless they are in the light of eternity.

  • The words of Ecclesiastes 1:2 would come alive:
    “Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

Psalm 39:5: Life Is But a Breath

David reminds us in Psalm 39:5:
“You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.”

This verse underscores the brevity of life. Even the wealthiest, most powerful, or most “secure” among us are like a fleeting breath. In light of this, a true Christian should live each day with eternity in mind.

What Does It Mean to Live as If Every Day Were Your Last?

  1. Prioritize God’s Will

    • Seek His guidance in all you do. Matthew 6:33:
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

    • Live each day asking yourself: “Am I doing what God wants me to do?”

  2. Let Go of Grudges

    • Reconciliation should not be delayed. Forgive others just as Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32:
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
  3. Value Relationships Over Possessions

    • Material things are temporary, but relationships and acts of love are eternal. 1 Timothy 6:7:
“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”
  4. Break Free From Sin

    • Surrender bad habits and sin to God. Ask for His grace to overcome them. Hebrews 12:1:
“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”
  5. Invest in Your Spiritual Growth

    • Spend time in prayer, worship, and studying God’s Word. Build your relationship with Him daily.
  6. Live With an Eternal Perspective

    • Recognize that your time on earth is preparation for eternity. 2 Corinthians 4:18:
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

How Should a True Christian Live?

God desires that we live each day in light of eternity, not just when we face the thought of death.

Here’s how:

  1. Live a Life of Purpose

    • Align your actions with God’s purpose for your life.

    • Ask yourself daily: “Am I living for God’s glory or for my own desires?”

  2. Make Forgiveness a Daily Habit

    • Keep short accounts with others. Don’t wait until tomorrow to forgive or ask for forgiveness.
  3. Focus on What Truly Matters

    • Don’t waste time chasing things that have no eternal value. Invest in relationships, acts of kindness, and your spiritual growth.
  4. Be Ready at All Times

    • 2 Corinthians 6:2 reminds us:
“Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”

    • Don’t postpone your commitment to God. Be ready to meet Him at any moment.

A Prayer for Living With Eternity in Mind

“Lord Jesus, teach me to live each day as if it were my last. Help me to prioritize Your will above all else and to reconcile with those I’ve hurt or who have hurt me. Free me from the grip of materialism, bad habits, and sin, and draw me closer to You daily. Give me the grace to focus on what truly matters and to live with an eternal perspective. May my life reflect Your love, mercy, and purpose in every way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Encouragement

  • “Live each day as if it were your last; one day you will be proven right.”

  • If you start living with eternity in mind, your life will take on a deeper sense of purpose, peace, and joy.

  • Don’t wait for a wake-up call. Start today by doing those very things God wants you to do daily.

Ask yourself: If today were my last day, would I be ready to meet God?
