Are You Spending Your Time Wisely?
Galatians 5:16-24, Ephesians 5:15-16, Job 1:6-7
The Value of Time
Time is one of the most precious resources God has given us. It is limited, irreplaceable, and fleeting. How we spend our time determines the kind of life we live and the legacy we leave behind.
Ephesians 5:15-16:
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
The question is: Are you using your time wisely, or are you letting Satan, the chief time-waster, distract you with things that have no eternal value?
Four Common Time-Wasters
1. Undisciplined Leisures
Spending excessive time on:
Watching movies and TV.
Playing video games.
Scrolling endlessly on social media.
These activities may seem harmless, but they can lead to idolatry—putting entertainment above God.
1 Corinthians 10:23:
“You say, ‘I have the right to do anything,’ but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything,’ but not everything is constructive.”
2. Obsession in Friendships
Wasting time on unhealthy friendships by:
Gossiping about others’ weaknesses.
Harboring anger and bitterness toward an ex-spouse or friend.
Neglecting personal development and spiritual growth.
Toxic relationships drain your energy and keep you from fulfilling God’s purpose for your life.
3. Self-Gratification
Chasing worldly pleasures such as:
Material wealth.
Lustful desires.
Drunkenness or seduction.
These activities provide temporary satisfaction but leave you spiritually empty.
Galatians 5:19-21:
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
4. Bitterness
Harboring envy, hatred, or resentment toward others for their success or your lack of progress.
Instead of blaming others or life’s circumstances, focus on leveraging your strengths to overcome your weaknesses.
Hebrews 12:15:
“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”
The Root of All Time-Wasting: Satan
Satan is the chief time-waster.
Job 1:6-7:
“The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.’”He spends his time roaming aimlessly and enticing people to waste their own time on vanity, distractions, and sin.
His goal is to keep you busy chasing after things that have no eternal value, ensuring your capacities remain dormant and your God-given talents undeveloped.
How to Spend Your Time Wisely
1. Prioritize Your Relationship With God
Spend time in prayer, worship, and reading the Bible daily.
Matthew 6:33:
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
2. Use Your Gifts and Talents
Identify the gifts God has given you and use them to serve Him and others.
1 Peter 4:10:
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
3. Focus on What Truly Matters
Invest in meaningful relationships and activities that bring glory to God.
Colossians 3:2:
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
4. Plan Your Day Wisely
Be intentional about how you spend your time. Create a schedule that includes:
Time with God.
Time for work or personal development.
Time for rest and recreation in moderation.
5. Avoid Distractions
Be mindful of things that steal your time, like social media, gossip, or laziness.
Proverbs 4:25-27:
“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”
A Prayer for Wisdom to Spend Time Wisely
“Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of time. Forgive me for the moments I’ve wasted on things that do not glorify You. Teach me to use my time wisely, prioritizing my relationship with You and investing in things that have eternal value. Help me to avoid distractions, toxic relationships, and sinful desires. Let my life reflect Your purpose, and may I fulfill the plans You have for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Final Encouragement
Time is precious; don’t waste it on things that lead to idolatry, gossip, self-gratification, or bitterness.
Instead, spend your time building your relationship with God, developing your talents, and serving others.
Declaration
“I will no longer waste my time on things that do not glorify God. I will prioritize my relationship with Him, invest in meaningful activities, and live with purpose. My time is valuable, and I will use it to honor the Lord.”
