Why Not Focus on “Being” Instead of “Blaming”?

Genesis 37–50, Romans 12:2, Philippians 4:13

The Power of Focusing on “Being”

It’s human nature to look for someone or something to blame when life doesn’t go as planned. But blaming others keeps you stuck, while focusing on “being” what God says you are empowers you to rise above your circumstances.

What Does God Say About You?

  • “I am what God says I am.”

  • “I have what God says I have.”

  • “I can do what God says I can do.”

When you live by these truths, you align your thoughts, words, and actions with God’s promises, enabling you to move forward no matter what life throws at you.

Joseph: An Example of “Being” Over “Blaming”

1. Joseph Did Not Languish in Self-Pity

  • Genesis 37: Despite being sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph didn’t waste time blaming them for his situation.

  • Instead, he stayed focused on “being” what God called him to be—a man of integrity and purpose.

2. Joseph Refused to Compromise His Integrity

  • Genesis 39: Even when falsely accused and imprisoned after resisting Potiphar’s wife, Joseph chose righteousness over resentment.

  • He worked on “being” faithful to God rather than blaming his circumstances.

3. Joseph Used His Gifts to Make an Impact

  • While in prison, Joseph didn’t sit idle or complain. He used his God-given gift of interpreting dreams to help others, which eventually opened the door for his promotion.

  • Genesis 41: His faithfulness and focus on “being” what God called him to be led to him becoming second-in-command in Egypt.

Why Blaming Is a Trap

1. Blaming Keeps You Stuck

  • When you blame others or circumstances, you shift responsibility and rob yourself of the power to change your situation.

  • Proverbs 19:3:
“A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.”

2. Blaming Breeds Resentment

  • Blaming others leads to bitterness, envy, and a stagnant spiritual life.

3. Blaming Diminishes Growth

  • When you focus on what others did to you, you miss opportunities for personal development and transformation.

Focus on “Being” What God Says You Are

1. Renew Your Mind

  • Stop dwelling on past hurts or comparing yourself to others. Instead, focus on God’s promises.

  • Romans 12:2:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

2. Take Responsibility

  • You are “response-able”—you have the ability to choose how you respond to life’s challenges.

  • Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

3. Develop Your Gifts and Talents

  • Work on your inner circle of influence, just as Joseph did in prison.

  • Your gifts will open doors for you at the right time.

  • Proverbs 18:16:
“A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.”

4. Stay Faithful in Every Season

  • Whether you’re in a pit, a prison, or a palace, remain faithful to God.

  • Trust that He is working all things together for your good.

  • Romans 8:28:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Practical Steps to Focus on “Being”

  1. Declare God’s Promises Over Your Life Daily

    • Speak life over yourself:

      • “I am chosen, loved, and called by God.”

      • “I am equipped to fulfill my purpose.”

      • “I will not be defined by my circumstances.”

  2. Work on Your Gifts and Talents

    • Develop the abilities God has placed in you, no matter your current situation.
  3. Forgive and Let Go of Blame

    • Release any bitterness or resentment toward others. Forgiveness frees you to move forward.
  4. Serve Where You Are

    • Make a positive impact in your current environment, just as Joseph did in prison.
  5. Pray for God’s Guidance

    • Ask God to reveal who He says you are and to guide you in fulfilling His purpose for your life.

A Prayer to Focus on “Being”

“Lord Jesus, I thank You for calling me to be who You say I am. Forgive me for the times I’ve focused on blaming others instead of becoming what You created me to be. Help me to renew my mind, develop my gifts, and trust in Your promises. Give me the strength to stay faithful in every season, knowing that You are working all things together for my good. Teach me to embrace my responsibility to live in alignment with Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Encouragement

  • Stop blaming. Start becoming.

  • Focus on “being” what God says you are, just as Joseph did.

  • Your actions, faithfulness, and focus today will shape the future God has prepared for you.

Declaration

“I am what God says I am. I have what God says I have. I can do what God says I can do. I will not blame others or my circumstances; I will focus on becoming who God has called me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
