Love Is a Verb
Love Is a Verb
1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Galatians 2:20, John 3:16
What Is Love?
Love is not just a feeling or an emotion—it is a verb, an action, something you do. True love is practical, selfless, and sacrificial. It is expressed through our actions, not just our words.
1 John 3:18:
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Characteristics of True Love
1. Love Forgives and Does Not Hold Offenses
True love does not keep a record of wrongs. It forgives, even when it’s difficult.
1 Corinthians 13:5:
“It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”
2. Love Sacrifices
Love gives itself for the benefit of others, just as Jesus sacrificed Himself for us.
Galatians 2:20:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
3. Love Expresses Itself in Giving
Genuine love is demonstrated through giving, and giving often involves sacrifice.
John 3:16:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
4. Love Is Patient and Kind
Love takes time to care, listen, and show compassion, even in challenging circumstances.
1 Corinthians 13:4:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”
What Love Is Not
1. Love Is Not Confrontational or Self-Serving
True love does not seek to win arguments or prove itself right.
Philippians 2:3:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
2. Love Is Not Just a Feeling
- Hollywood often portrays love as an intense feeling or physical attraction, but true love goes beyond emotions. Feelings fade, but actions rooted in love leave a lasting impact.
The Best Expression of Love Is Through Giving
1. Genuine Giving Involves Sacrifice
When we give, we are showing love. But true love goes beyond giving what is convenient—it requires sacrifice.
Luke 6:38:
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.”
2. Love in Marriage: A Lesson in Sacrificial Giving
In marriage, love often fades when couples stop sacrificing for each other. Sacrifice reignites love and strengthens the bond.
Ephesians 5:25:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.”
3. Love as Service
Serving others is one of the highest forms of love. It shows humility and selflessness.
Mark 10:45:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Practical Ways to “Do Love”
Forgive Quickly
- Don’t hold on to grudges or offenses. Forgiveness is an act of love.
Sacrifice for Others
- Give your time, energy, and resources to those in need, even when it’s inconvenient.
Be Kind and Patient
- Show compassion and understanding, even when others test your patience.
Give Without Expecting Anything in Return
- True love is unconditional and doesn’t seek rewards.
Pray for Others
- One of the most powerful ways to show love is by interceding for others in prayer.
Serve in Your Community
- Look for ways to serve in your church, family, and local community.
A Prayer for Genuine Love
“Lord Jesus, thank You for demonstrating the ultimate act of love through Your sacrifice on the cross. Teach me to love as You love—selflessly, sacrificially, and unconditionally. Help me to forgive, give, and serve from the depths of my heart. Let my actions reflect Your love in my daily life. Holy Spirit, guide me to ‘do love’ and let love lead in all I say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Final Encouragement
Love is not something you feel; it’s something you do.
Express love through forgiveness, sacrifice, giving, and serving.
Let your love be rooted in action, not just words or emotions.
Declaration
“I will love as Jesus loves—selflessly, sacrificially, and unconditionally. I will let my actions reflect my love for God and others. I choose to ‘do love’ and let love lead in every area of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
