🌿 Who Is a Prophet?

Understanding the True Nature and Calling of God’s Mouthpiece

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
1 John 4:1–3 (NIV)

✨ What Is a Prophet — Really?

Many today assume a prophet’s only duty is to predict the future or reveal hidden truths. But the office of a prophet is far deeper, more sacred, and more demanding than that.

A prophet is God’s spokesperson, a vessel through whom Heaven speaks to Earth. He is not self-appointed, self-inspired or self-moved. He speaks only when, and only when, God speaks.

Prophet T.B. Joshua explained this beautifully:

This means that a prophet cannot prophesy, heal, or even pray for anyone at will. He must first receive divine suggestion or intimation — a prompting from the Holy Spirit — before he acts.

“Therefore Jesus told them, ‘My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.’” — John 7:6
Even Jesus, the Son of God, waited for divine timing. How much more should a prophet wait upon God before speaking?

If the Son of God waited, how much more must a prophet?

🌿 Two Classes of Prophets

1. The General Prophet (General Practitioner)

These are prophets called to communicate the saving will of God — to teach, preach, and remind people of what has already been revealed through the Scriptures.

Their message focuses on repentance, faith, and obedience. They preach the Gospel, edify the church, and strengthen the faith of believers

2. The Prophet

These prophets receive direct and specific messages from God concerning events, individuals, or nations.

They are God’s mouthpieces in matters that require divine direction or intervention. Such prophets do not speak from human reasoning but from divine revelation.

“Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.”
Amos 3:7

💠 Character of a True Prophet

True prophecy flows from the heart of God—and so must the prophet.

The authenticity of a prophet is not determined by miracles, fame, or eloquence, but by character — by the fruit of the Spirit that flows through his life.

A true prophet is:

  • Meek and humble — never self-glorifying. never drawing attention to self.

  • Peaceable — not boastful. not given to division or strife.

  • Pure in heart — refraining from the impurities of the world.

  • Content — living simply, not greedy for material gain.

“He contents himself with fewer wants than those of other men.”

A prophet’s strength lies not in his possessions but in his submission to the will of God.

“He contents himself with fewer wants than those of other men.” - TB Joshua

Authenticity is not in eloquence, fame, or gifts, but in character and obedience.

🔥 The Prophet’s Spirit Speaks Only by the Spirit

The spirit of a prophet is under divine control. When God is silent, the prophet must be silent. When God speaks, the prophet must speak — boldly and truthfully.

“For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:21

No prophet has the liberty to speak at will or perform signs apart from God’s instruction. That means no true prophet can manipulate prophecy for personal agenda or convenience. He speaks from revelation, not from imagination.

T.B. Joshua said:

“A true prophet speaks what he hears from God — not what he thinks, not what he imagines, and not what people expect him to say.”

⚖️ How to Discern a True Prophecy

The Bible instructs:

“Test all things; hold fast what is good.”
1 Thessalonians 5:21

Here are spiritual indicators to help you discern whether a prophecy is from God or from man:

  1. Is it specific and piercing to the heart?
True prophecy pierces the heart, not the ears. It leaves no room for vague interpretation because God is not the author of confusion.

  2. Does it bring transformation or redemption?
God’s word never leaves people unchanged. True Prophecy transforms lives. After receiving it, your situation should move toward redemption, correction, or restoration - not confusion.

  3. Is it beyond natural knowledge?
Divine revelation transcends human reasoning. True prophecy carries divine insight that no man could have known without revelation.

  4. Does it align with Scripture?
God’s Word and His Spirit never contradict each other. If it goes against the Bible, reject it

  5. Does it bring peace to your spirit?
    Real prophecy convicts without condemning.

💡 Guard Your Heart — The Gateway to Discernment

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23

If your heart is burdened by offense, worry, or fear, it becomes fertile soil for deception. Even the false prophet will recognize such vulnerability and exploit it.

To hear clearly from God — or to discern His true servants — your heart must be free, pure, and submissive to the Holy Spirit.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8

🙏 Finally People of God

A prophet is not defined by his gifts but by who sent him.

A true prophet does not draw attention to himself but points all attention to Jesus Christ.

“The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
Revelation 19:10

When God truly speaks through a prophet, the words carry life, power, and peace. They accomplish what they were sent to do because the Holy Spirit stands behind them.

So, before you run after prophecy, seek first the God of the prophet.
Before you listen to a voice, test the spirit behind the voice.

A true prophet reveals the heart of God — not just the future.

Let us desire to hear God’s voice above all and walk in His truth.

🌿 Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to discern Your voice amidst the noise of this world.
Give me the wisdom to test every spirit by Your Word.
Keep my heart free from deception and open to Your truth.
Make me sensitive to Your Spirit and humble to receive correction.
Take more of me and give me more of You, Lord. Amen.
