What You Need in Order to Hear from God
“Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
— Jeremiah 33:3
Hearing from God is not about having special ears; it is about having a prepared heart. God speaks, but the question is—are we in a position to hear Him?
Every believer desires to hear from God, to receive His direction, His comfort, His warning, and His reassurance. But hearing God requires a deliberate posture of the heart, mind, and spirit.
We don’t hear God with our senses or feelings or emotions; it is about having a prepared heart. God speaks, but the question is—are we in a position to hear Him?
Here are the key conditions you must meet if you truly want to recognize His voice and walk in His counsel
I have coined out an acronym called PATCH or WATCH to help you remember.
P for Place
A for Availability
T for The Word
C for Commitment
H for Humility
or
W for Wilderness
A for Availability
T for The Word
C for Commitment
H for Humility
1. Place — Find Your Sanctuary in Nature
The world is full of distractions that cloud your spiritual sensitivity. Endless noise—social media, news, entertainment etc. can choke the still, small voice of God.
This is why Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16).
Go into nature: The rustle of leaves, the flow of water at a quiet riverside, the mountaintop, the whisper of the wind—nature itself enhances your spiritual sensitivity. The stillness of nature echoes the stillness God wants in your spirit.
Give your flesh some discomfort: An early morning prayer walk or night vigil—stepping away from your comfort zone sharpens your spiritual senses.
“If you do not separate yourself to hear from God, you will hear the noise of the world.”
— Prophet T.B. Joshua
Sometimes, this means giving your flesh discomfort to make your spirit alert — fasting, isolation, or switching off all digital devices to focus fully on Him.
📖 “Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” — Mark 1:35
2. Availability — Give Him Your Time, Not Your Leftovers
God is not bound by your clock, but you must surrender your schedule, your mind, your agenda to Him. He owns your time.
No one is busier than God — yet He is always on time and never fails.
Even the busiest day cannot compare to God’s eternal work, yet He is never too busy to hear you. Come with a free spirit, because:
Availability means coming with a free and open spirit. If your heart is burdened with worries, grudges, or endless to-do lists, His voice will be drowned out.
“The worries of this life… choke the word, making it unfruitful.” (Mark 4:19)
“It’s like planting a good seed among weeds — the weeds will choke it before it grows.”
Cut off distractions:
- Time-wasters
- The false sense of “busy-ness”
- Endless “urgent” matters that are not important
Prophet TB Joshua once said:
“If you want to hear from God, you must be free from offense, worry, and self-interest.”
3. The Word — God Speaks Through His Word
If you want to hear God’s voice, open His Book. Immerse yourself in His Word.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Keep His Word:
- In your heart — through meditation
- In your mouth — through confession
- In your life — through obedience
When the Word dominates your heart, it will dominate your mouth; when it dominates your mouth, it will shape your conduct and character; when it shapes your conduct and character, whatever you do will prosper (Joshua 1:8).
“God Does Nothing Without His Word” - Prophet TB Joshua
4. Commitment — A Covenant Friendship
“The LORD confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them.”
— Psalm 25:14
Hearing God is not a one-time event but a daily walk. It will cost you effort, discipline, and consistency.
Walking with God requires daily effort. Commitment is staying focused even when you feel nothing.
Many hear God for a season, but few remain consistent. Be ready to show up for Him daily because friendship with God is built on intentional time together.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8
Friendship with God is a covenant — and covenants demand loyalty.
Just as you make appointments for work or meetings, set an unmovable appointment with God daily. He is your life source.
Practical Step: Set aside fixed times for prayer and Scripture meditation. Guard them like appointments with the most important Person in your life—because they are.
5. Humility — Let Him Lead, Don’t Rush Him
You cannot hear God if you insist on being in control.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Hearing Him requires waiting without rushing. He speaks when He wills, not when you demand.
Be willing to linger at His feet. Let Him set the pace.
As Prophet T.B. Joshua often said:
“You can never be greater than your Master. If Jesus waited on the Father before acting, we too must wait.”
God’s timing is perfect. Don’t rush God—He speaks as He wills.
Be still before Him (Psalm 46:10)
Be teachable
Be ready to listen, not just to talk.
Don’t set time limits—His timing is perfect.
The proud cannot hear from God because they believe they already know what He should say. But the humble wait for His voice without dictating how or when it should come.
Final Encouragement
Hearing God is not for a select few — it’s for anyone who is willing to withdraw from the noise, surrender their time, commit daily, feed on His Word, and walk in humility.
If you make these five your lifestyle, His voice will no longer be a mystery to you.
You will walk in clarity, peace, and divine direction — every single day.
- Find your quiet place.
- Be available in spirit.
- Commit daily.
- Feed on His Word.
- Walk in humility.
When your spirit is free, your heart is humble, and your mind is fixed on Him—you will hear His voice more clearly than you ever imagined.
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
