What are your Criteria for Choosing a Role Model?

1 Thessalonians 5:21, John 14:11, Acts 10:38, 2 Corinthians 5:7

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:21: “Test all things; hold fast to what is good.”

  • John 14:11: “Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.”

  • Acts 10:38: “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with Him.”

  • 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we live by faith, not by sight.”

What Do You Look for in a Role Model?

When choosing a role model or mentor, what criteria guide your decision? Is it their:

  • Wealth?

  • Career success?

  • Fame or celebrity status?

  • Power or position in society?

While these outward qualities may look attractive, they are not the true measure of a person. A man’s worth is not determined by what is on the outside, but by who he is on the inside.

Outward vs. Inward Qualities

A person may be known for doing good, but being good is different from being Godly.

  • Many outwardly good people lack Godliness.

  • Prophet TB Joshua once said:
“A man may profess to be a Christian but not such in heart.”

This is why discernment is critical. Whatever looks good on the outside must be examined in the light of God’s Word.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:21 instructs us to:
“Test all things; hold fast what is good.”

The Example of Jesus

Acts 10:38 tells us why Jesus is the ultimate role model:
“Jesus went about doing good, healing the sick, delivering the demon-possessed, and GOD WAS WITH HIM.”

I want to be like Jesus not only because He was known for doing good but, most importantly, because God was with Him.

  • John 14:11 reminds us:
“Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.”

The presence of God in Jesus is what made His life and ministry so powerful. Without God, outward success and goodness lose their eternal value.

Beware of Living by Sight

2 Corinthians 5:7 says:
“For we live by faith, not by sight.”

If your only criteria for choosing a role model is their:

  • Money,

  • Fame,

  • Power, or

  • Success,

then you are living by sight, not by faith. You are exposing your limitations as someone who judges based on what is seen rather than what is unseen.

The Danger of Following the Wrong Role Model

If you follow a man or woman solely for their outward success, you may unknowingly inherit the spirit that rules them.

💡 “If the one inside the man you desire to be like is ruled by Satan, then that comes along as part of the package you get.”

Choose wisely. Look beyond outward appearances and examine the spirit and heart of the person you want to emulate.

How to Choose a Role Model

1️⃣ Seek Godly Role Models

  • Look for people who reflect Christ in their actions and character.

  • A Godly role model does not just do good—they walk with God.

2️⃣ Test Their Fruits

  • Matthew 7:16: “By their fruit, you will recognize them.”

  • Examine their life in light of Scripture. Are their actions, words, and decisions consistent with the teachings of Christ?

3️⃣ Pray for Discernment

  • Ask God to help you see the truth about the person. Pray for wisdom to recognize whether their spirit aligns with God’s Spirit.

4️⃣ Focus on Inward Qualities

  • Prioritize character, integrity, humility, and Godliness over wealth, fame, or power.

  • Follow those who inspire your faith, not just your ambition.

Final Encouragement

Don’t be deceived by outward success, wealth, or fame. Test all things in the light of God’s Word and choose role models who reflect Christ in their actions and character.

Remember: Being good is not the same as being Godly. Choose to follow people who inspire your faith and draw you closer to God.

Prayer

🙏 Father, help me to choose my role models wisely. Teach me to look beyond outward appearances and to discern the heart and spirit of those I admire. May I follow those who walk with You and reflect Your character. Above all, help me to model my life after Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate example of Godliness, love, and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
