The Foundational Spirits of Man

2 Peter 1:4, 1 Samuel 16:7, 1 Thessalonians 5:23, Romans 8:26-27, 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

There are three main types of spirit:

God’s Spirit, Satan’s spirit, and man’s spirit. These are the foundational spirits.

Man’s spirit is unique as it has the ability, freedom, and capacity to choose between God and Satan. According to the Bible, humans possess two natures: a spiritual nature and a physical nature—2 Peter 1:4

Man is comprised of spirit, soul, and body, which function as one. The spirit is the divine part of man, created in the likeness of God, and it is where God speaks to and dwells within us. While humans often focus on the physical, God looks at the spiritual. 1 Samuel 16:7

Now, let’s look deeper on the function of each—1Thess 5:23

1. Body (Outward Man):

  • Represents the physical aspect.

  • Comprises intellect, emotions, and the human heart.

  • Operates through the five senses (taste, touch, sight, smell, hearing).

2. Soul (Inner Being):

  • Represents self-consciousness.

  • Controls thoughts, emotions, and decision-making.

  • Functions through the mind and is influenced by external factors.

3. Spirit (Innermost Being):

  • Represents the realm of conscience and spiritual awareness.

  • Enables man to distinguish spiritual truths and discern God’s will.

  • Houses the Holy Spirit when one is born again.

How do we speak to God?

The Spirit (Inner Man) is immersed in the Holy Spirit and can communicate directly with God and receive His revelations.

Romans 8:26-27 teaches that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, helping us to pray in alignment with God’s will.

Prophet TB Joshua teaches that prayer is a 2-Way conversation—We speak, God listens and we listen for God’s response in our heart.

How do we hear God’s response?

This happens through meditation. As we meditate over God’s word and His promises, our meditation brings revelation from God concerning our request. 2 Corinthians 12:7–9.

This Revelation from God helps us understand His will and align our actions accordingly.

Prayer

“Holy Spirit, take more of us and give us more of You. Take more of our natural tendencies and replace them with Your divine nature. Grant us more of Your love, obedience, and humility. Open our eyes to understand the things of the spirit and guide us to live in harmony with Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
