Do Your Words Glorify God
Is Your Speech Profitable to Others?
Luke 6:45, 2 Timothy 2:16
Luke 6:45: “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
2 Timothy 2:16: “Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.”
What Does Your Speech Say About Your Heart?
The words you speak are a direct reflection of the state of your heart.
Luke 6:45 teaches us that a person’s speech is an overflow of what is stored in their heart. If your heart is filled with good treasures—love, faith, kindness, and God’s Word—your words will reflect that goodness.
Conversely, if your heart is filled with bitterness, pride, or selfishness, your speech will reveal it.
Key Insight:
Your speech is not just communication; it is evidence of the treasury of your heart.
The Power of Words
Words have the power to build up or tear down, to encourage or discourage, to heal or hurt.
Proverbs 18:21 reminds us: “The tongue has the power of life and death.”
If your words are negative, filled with idle chatter, gossip, or vain talk, you are not only harming others but also testifying against yourself.
Avoid Idle and Vain Talk
2 Timothy 2:16 warns us to avoid godless chatter because it leads to ungodliness.
Idle or vain talk comes from a heart that is disconnected from God’s truth. It is often influenced by circumstances, feelings, or the majority opinion, rather than God’s authority.
Example: Elisha’s Servant
Elisha’s servant in 2 Kings 6:15–17 was filled with fear when he saw the enemy army surrounding them. His speech revealed his doubt and fear.
But Elisha, whose heart trusted in God’s authority, spoke words of faith: “Don’t be afraid… Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Elisha’s words came from a heart filled with faith and confidence in God.
Lesson: Your words should reflect your trust in God, not your fear of circumstances.
Speech as Evidence on the Last Day
On the last day, your words will serve as evidence for or against you.
Matthew 12:36–37: “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
How to Make Your Speech Profitable
1️⃣ Store Good Treasures in Your Heart
Fill your heart with God’s Word and His truth.
Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
What you meditate on will naturally flow out of your mouth.
2️⃣ Seek God’s Grace for Your Speech
No one can consistently speak good and profitable words without the grace of God.
Pray daily for God to sanctify your heart and your words.
Psalm 141:3: “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
3️⃣ Speak Words of Life and Encouragement
Use your words to edify, encourage, and inspire others.
Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
4️⃣ Be Slow to Speak
Think before you speak. Consider whether your words align with God’s truth and whether they will profit those who hear them.
James 1:19: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
5️⃣ Speak in Faith, Not Fear
Let your speech reflect your trust in God, even in difficult circumstances.
Replace fear-filled words with faith-filled declarations, just as Elisha did.
