WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A FRIEND OF GOD?

John 15:14, James 4:4, 1 Corinthians 2:14

Jesus said in John 15:14,
“You are my friends if you do what I command.”

Friendship with God is not a casual title; it is a divine covenant. It is more than believing in Him—it is walking with Him, speaking His Word, and obeying His commands without compromise.

This means that being a friend of God goes beyond believing in His Word; God desires that His children:

1️⃣ Believe His Word.
2️⃣ Speak His Word.
3️⃣ Obey His Word.

1. Friendship With God Demands Obedience

Jesus made it clear: His friends are those who obey Him. Obedience is not about convenience; it is about commitment. When God speaks, His friends respond instantly, without debate.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”John 14:15

2. Friendship With God Displaces Friendship With the World

The Bible warns:

“Don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”James 4:4

You cannot keep one foot in God’s kingdom and the other in the world’s system. When Christ takes His rightful place in your heart, the world’s desires lose their grip on you.

3. Friendship With God Attracts Misunderstanding

When you truly walk with God, the world will misunderstand you. They may mock you, label you, or distance themselves from you—not because you are wrong, but because you are different.

Prophet TB Joshua once said: “When you are truly following Jesus, persecution and misunderstanding are a necessary proof of your direction.”

And remember: if the world fully understands you, it might mean you have blended in too much with it.

4. The Way of Obedience Is the Way of Blessing

Obedience is the pathway to God’s favor, protection, and purpose. Abraham was called “God’s friend” because he obeyed without hesitation (James 2:23).

“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.”Isaiah 1:19

NO COMPROMISE BETWEEN GOD AND THE WORLD

You cannot claim to be a friend of God while still living as a friend of the world. There is no middle ground between the two.
James 4:4 says:
“Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God?”
When Christ takes His rightful place in your heart, the world must be displaced. You cannot serve both.

EXPECT MISUNDERSTANDING

When you become a true friend of God, people may misunderstand you, criticize you, and even call you names. This happens because they cannot comprehend the ways of God.
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”1 Corinthians 2:14

Prophet TB Joshua once said, “When people don’t understand you, they criticize you. When they understand you, they destroy you.”

PRAYER

“Lord Jesus, I promise to follow the way of obedience because the way of obedience is the way of blessing, success, and a bright future. I pray that people will not understand me so I can remain fully aligned with Your divine purpose for my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen!”
