Pray Against Your Weaknesses: Don’t Let Satan Use Them Against You

Matthew 7:7, Matthew 6:31-34, 2 Corinthians 12:9

Have You Prayed Against Your Weaknesses?

How often do you ask God to remove your weaknesses? Many of us are so focused on asking God for blessings, healing, or material needs that we overlook the root cause of many of our challenges: our weaknesses. These weaknesses, such as anger, lust, pride, hatred, offense, or addiction, are the very avenues Satan uses to gain access to our lives and cause destruction.

Matthew 7:7 reminds us:
“Ask, and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”

However, many misunderstand this verse as an invitation to ask only for material things or temporary relief. But the deeper meaning is that we should seek spiritual transformation—asking God to remove the weaknesses that hinder our relationship with Him.

The Danger of Ignoring Our Weaknesses

Your weaknesses are the enemy’s entry points. They are like open doors that allow Satan to afflict you with hardship, sickness, barrenness, or other challenges.

Instead of constantly asking God for more money or a better job, why not pray:
“Lord, remove the pride in my heart.”
“Father, help me overcome anger and unforgiveness.”
“Jesus, break the chains of lust and pornography in my life.”

When you deal with the root (your weaknesses), the fruit (the troubles caused by those weaknesses) will also disappear.

Matthew 6:31-34 teaches us:
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

God knows your needs better than you do. Instead of itemizing your needs, focus on seeking a closer relationship with Him by asking Him to help you overcome your weaknesses.

Weaknesses and God’s Grace

Not all weaknesses are meant to be removed. In some cases, God may allow a weakness to remain in your life to teach you dependence on His grace, as in the case of Apostle Paul.

2 Corinthians 12:9 says:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

When God permits a weakness, He provides sufficient grace for you to overcome it. This does not mean you should give in to temptation or sin, but rather, you should rely on God’s strength to resist and triumph over your weaknesses.

How to Overcome Weaknesses

  1. Keep Your Prayer Line Open

    • When temptations come, don’t allow shame or guilt to disconnect you from God. If you fall into sin, go to God immediately in prayer.

    • James 5:16 encourages us: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

    • Satan’s goal is to use guilt to keep you from praying. Don’t let that happen—pray even more when you feel weak.

  2. Fast and Pray More

    • Fasting is a powerful spiritual weapon that strengthens your spirit and weakens the flesh. If you fall into a particular weakness, use fasting as a way to discipline yourself and seek God’s help.
  3. Fill Your Heart with God’s Word

    • God’s Word refreshes your mind and gives you the strength to resist temptation. Memorize Scripture that speaks to your specific weakness and declare it in moments of struggle.

    • Psalm 119:11 says: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

  4. Seek Accountability

    • Share your struggles with a trusted spiritual mentor or fellow believer who can pray with you and encourage you. You don’t have to fight your weaknesses alone.
  5. Repent and Keep Moving Forward

    • If you fall, don’t stay down. Repent, receive God’s forgiveness, and keep moving forward. God is more concerned about your relationship with Him than your mistakes.

The Importance of Prayer and Weaknesses

Weaknesses are not meant to separate us from God. Instead, they are meant for our spiritual growth. When you struggle with a weakness, use it as an opportunity to draw closer to God in prayer and depend on His strength.

Remember, the enemy cannot use your weaknesses against you if you keep your prayer line active. Temptations may come, but they don’t have to define you.

Prayer

“Lord Jesus, I ask You today to help me identify and overcome the weaknesses in my life. Remove anything in me that gives Satan access to my heart. Help me to keep my prayer line active and to rely on Your grace when I am weak. Thank You for Your forgiveness and for making Your strength perfect in my weakness. Amen.”
