WHY WE MUST WATCH AND PRAY
Why We Must “Watch and Pray”
Matthew 7:20, Matthew 26:41, Acts 16:16–34, Psalm 12:2
The Power of Watching and Praying
Jesus commands us to “watch and pray” because as believers, we need both visual discernment and spiritual discernment to navigate this world.
Matthew 7:20 reminds us:
“Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruits, so you can identify people by their actions.”
This verse teaches that we can often recognize fake from genuine people by their actions—their “fruits.” However, while visual discernment (looking at someone’s actions from the perspective of God’s Word) is important, it is not enough on its own.
Why Visual Discernment Alone is Insufficient
Though we can observe people’s actions and use God’s Word as a guide, visual discernment is not foolproof. Why?
Actions Can Be Deceptive
Matthew 15:8 says:
“These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.”People can appear righteous on the outside while their hearts harbor ulterior motives. For example:
They may serve God publicly but secretly seek recognition or personal gain.
They may show kindness outwardly but hold bitterness or malice inwardly.
Only God Knows the Heart
While actions are visible, motives are hidden. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal the true intentions of someone’s heart.
Isaiah 29:13 confirms this:
“These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.”
Pretenders Exist
Many people profess to know Jesus and even hold important positions in the church or society, but they are not truly of God.
Psalm 12:2 says:
“Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts.”
The Importance of Spiritual Discernment
To go beyond the surface, we need spiritual discernment through the help of the Holy Spirit. A powerful example of this is in Acts 16:16–34, when Apostle Paul encountered a slave girl possessed by a demonic spirit:
The girl was following Paul and his companions, shouting:
“These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved!”By her actions and words, it seemed like she was praising God and supporting Paul’s mission.
However, through the Holy Spirit’s discernment, Paul realized her true motive was demonic. He rebuked the spirit, and the girl was delivered.
Without the Holy Spirit’s guidance, Paul might have assumed the girl’s words were genuine. This shows why we cannot rely on visual discernment alone.
Why Jesus Says to “Watch and Pray”
Matthew 26:41 says:
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Here’s why watching and praying must work together:
“Watch” (Visual Discernment):
- Be alert and observe the fruits of people’s actions. Compare what you see with the Word of God to assess their character.
“Pray” (Holy Spirit Discernment):
- Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what your natural eyes cannot see—the hidden motives and spiritual truths behind someone’s actions.
Visual discernment helps you recognize outward behavior, but spiritual discernment reveals the heart behind that behavior. Together, they protect you from deception and help you walk in God’s wisdom.
Practical Steps to Watch and Pray
Stay Rooted in God’s Word
- Read and meditate on Scripture daily. The Word of God is your standard for evaluating actions and motives.
Ask for the Holy Spirit’s Guidance
- Pray for discernment in every situation. James 1:5 says:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
- Pray for discernment in every situation. James 1:5 says:
Be Observant, But Not Judgmental
- Watch people’s actions, but don’t rush to conclusions. Remember that only God can fully judge the heart.
Pray for Protection from Deception
- Ask God to protect you from being misled by outward appearances. Pray for clarity and wisdom to see the truth.
Remain Humble and Teachable
- Rely on the Holy Spirit rather than your own understanding. Stay open to His guidance in every situation. Proverbs 3:5
Prayer
“Lord Jesus, thank You for teaching me the importance of watching and praying. Help me to stay alert and to discern actions through the lens of Your Word. Holy Spirit, grant me the spiritual discernment to see beyond appearances and recognize the true motives of those around me. Protect me from deception, and guide me to walk in wisdom and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
