How Humble Are You Before God and Men?
How Humble Are You Before God and Men?
Luke 18:9-14, Numbers 12:3, Daniel 2:30, 1 Peter 5:5-6
The Preciousness of Humility
Humility is one of the most precious virtues in the sight of God. Jesus Himself reminds us in Luke 18:14:
“Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
God elevates the humble and draws near to them because humility reflects a heart that depends on Him rather than self. Pride, on the other hand, distances us from God and makes us vulnerable to Satan’s schemes.
Examples of Humble Servants of God
Moses
Numbers 12:3:
“Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.”Despite leading the Israelites out of Egypt and performing great miracles, Moses always depended on God and never sought his own glory.
Daniel
Daniel 2:30:
“It’s not because I am wiser than anyone else that I know the secret of your dream, but I know the Revealer of all secrets.”Daniel gave all the glory to God for his wisdom and abilities, acknowledging that he was only a vessel in God’s hands.
Prophet T.B. Joshua
T.B. Joshua often said:
“I am not the Healer, but I know the Healer. His name is Jesus Christ.”Despite being mightily used by God to heal, deliver, and bless millions, he remained humble, always pointing people to Jesus as the source of all miracles.
These men of God were precious in His sight because of their humility and dependence on Him.
Humility Leads to Exaltation
1 Peter 5:5-6 teaches us:
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”
What does humility look like?
Acknowledging that all your achievements, talents, and blessings come from God, not your own strength.
Choosing to serve others, even when you hold a position of power.
Being teachable and open to correction.
Giving glory to God in all things, rather than seeking recognition for yourself.
Success Should Never Define You
The more successful you become in life, the more humble and thankful you must be. Your success should never define your character or identity. Instead, humility should be what people see when they look at you.
Here’s why humility is essential, even in success:
It Keeps You Grounded in God
- Success can make people forget their dependence on God. Humility reminds you that God is the source of every blessing.
It Protects You From Satan’s Schemes
The moment people see your success more than your character, you become an easy target for Satan.
Proverbs 16:18 warns:
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
It Draws People to Christ
- A humble spirit reflects the character of Jesus and draws others to Him.
How to Cultivate Humility
Acknowledge God as the Source of All
- Regularly remind yourself that every success, talent, and opportunity comes from God.
Be Thankful
- Cultivate a heart of gratitude for what God has done in your life. Thankfulness keeps pride at bay.
Serve Others
- Look for opportunities to serve others, especially those in need. Matthew 23:11:
“The greatest among you will be your servant.”
- Look for opportunities to serve others, especially those in need. Matthew 23:11:
Spend Time in God’s Presence
- Prayer and meditation on God’s Word help you maintain a posture of humility before Him.
Seek Accountability
- Surround yourself with people who can lovingly correct you and keep you humble.
Prayer for Humility
“Lord Jesus, thank You for the blessings, talents, and opportunities You have given me. Help me to remain humble before You and others, always giving glory to You for all that I have and all that I am. Teach me to serve others with love and to reflect Your character in everything I do. Protect me from pride and help me to walk in humility every day of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Final Encouragement
Never let your success define who you are. Let your humility speak louder than your accomplishments. The day people see your success more than your character, you give Satan an opportunity to attack. Instead, let your life reflect the humility of Christ, and God will exalt you in His perfect time.
