Are You a True Disciple of Jesus or Just a Follower?

Luke 9:23, Matthew 16:24, John 8:31-32

What Does It Mean to Be a Disciple of Jesus?

To be a disciple means more than just following someone; it involves embracing their philosophy, values, and principles in every aspect of your life.

The word “discipline” derives from the word “disciple.” This connection highlights that being a disciple requires personal discipline—a commitment to align your heart, thoughts, actions, and desires with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Are You a Disciple or Just a Follower?

A Follower

  • A follower observes from a distance.

  • They are intrigued by the miracles and teachings of Jesus but are not fully committed to living by His principles.

  • They lack personal discipline and rely on external circumstances to guide their actions.

A Disciple

  • A disciple goes beyond observing; they embrace Jesus’ values and principles as their own.

  • They actively ask themselves, “What would Jesus do in this situation?”

  • They are disciplined in heart, mind, and actions, reflecting Christ’s character daily.

John 8:31-32:
“If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

What It Takes to Be a True Disciple

  1. Deny Yourself

    • Luke 9:23:
“Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.”

    • A true disciple prioritizes Jesus’ will over personal desires.

  2. Embrace Jesus’ Values and Principles

    • To be a disciple, you must want things for the same reasons Jesus wants them.

    • Align your actions and motives with His teachings.

  3. Discipline Yourself

    • If your discipline does not come from within, you will struggle to submit to Jesus’ authority.

    • 1 Corinthians 9:27:
“I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

  4. Reflect Christ’s Character in the Small Things

    • Faith is manifested in the small things we do daily. This includes:

      • Controlling your thoughts.

      • Guarding your speech.

      • Being mindful of what you listen to and watch.

    • Matthew 16:24:
“If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.”

Signs of a “Kindergarten” Follower

If you cannot discipline your heart, thoughts, words, and actions, you remain a “Kindergarten” follower.

Characteristics of a Kindergarten Follower:

👶 They lack self-control.
👶 They are easily distracted by worldly desires.
👶 They prioritize emotions over principles.
👶 They only follow Jesus when it is convenient or beneficial.

But Jesus calls us to mature spiritually and become His true disciples.

How to Transition From Follower to Disciple

  1. Develop Personal Discipline

    • Start small. Begin with controlling your words and thoughts. Proverbs 4:23:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
  2. Seek Daily Guidance From Jesus

    • Pray and meditate on God’s Word. Ask for wisdom in every decision.
  3. Commit to Consistent Obedience

    • A true disciple doesn’t pick and choose which commands to follow. Submit to Jesus fully.
  4. Practice Self-Reflection

    • Regularly ask yourself, “Am I living like Jesus would in this situation?”
  5. Grow in Love and Service

    • Love others as Jesus loves you. Serve selflessly and reflect His kindness and compassion.

A Prayer to Become a True Disciple

“Lord Jesus, I desire to move beyond being just a follower to becoming Your true disciple. Help me to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You daily. Teach me to embrace Your values and principles in every area of my life. Grant me the discipline to guard my heart, control my thoughts, and reflect Your character in my actions. Holy Spirit, empower me to walk in obedience and grow in love for You and others. Let my life be a testimony of Your grace and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Encouragement

Are you ready to move from being a follower to a true disciple of Jesus?

  • A follower observes from the sidelines, but a disciple actively reflects Jesus’ character.

  • A follower is driven by convenience, but a disciple is led by personal discipline and obedience to God.

Make the decision today to live as a true disciple of Jesus. Remember, faith is manifested in the small things we do daily.
