A Mistake Is a Choice We Wish We Could Undo
Proverbs 28:13, 1 John 1:9, Philippians 3:13-14
What Is a Mistake?
A mistake is a choice we make that we later regret and wish we could undo. While mistakes are an inevitable part of life, they do not have to define us. What matters most is how we respond to those mistakes.
Mistakes don’t hurt us as much as our response to them does. The key is to take responsibility—“response-ability”—and choose wisely how to address them.
The Proactive Approach to Mistakes
Acknowledge the Mistake Immediately
Proverbs 28:13:
“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”Admitting a mistake is the first step toward healing and growth.
Make Corrections
When we correct our mistakes, we interrupt the cycle of self-deception and self-justification that satan wants us to fall into.
Correction shows humility and commitment to doing what is right.
Learn From the Mistake
Every mistake is an opportunity for growth.
Use mistakes as stepping stones for improvement, not stumbling blocks for condemnation.
The Danger of Not Acknowledging Mistakes
When we refuse to admit, correct, or learn from our mistakes, we:
Deceive Ourselves
- Satan wants us to pile up mistakes without dealing with them, creating a skyscraper of offenses that ultimately imprisons us.
Justify Ourselves
- Instead of taking responsibility, we make excuses and blame others, which hinders our spiritual growth.
Harden Our Hearts
- Ignoring mistakes can lead to pride, making it harder to receive correction and grace.
It’s Not the Mistake, It’s the Response
Mistakes themselves are not the greatest harm. The real damage comes from:
Denying responsibility.
Refusing to correct the mistake.
Repeating the same mistakes without learning from them.
Our response to a mistake shapes the quality of our character and determines whether the next mistake will be better handled or worse.
What Should You Do?
1. Take Responsibility
Own up to your mistakes. Stop blaming others or circumstances.
1 John 1:9:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
2. Run to Jesus
Don’t run away from God in shame. Instead, run to Him in humility and faith.
With Jesus, it doesn’t matter the mistake. As long as you acknowledge it and commit not to repeat it, He’s got your back.
3. Learn and Move Forward
Stop dwelling on past mistakes. Instead, learn from them and move forward.
Philippians 3:13-14:
“But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
A Prayer for Responding to Mistakes
“Lord Jesus, thank You for Your mercy and grace. I acknowledge my mistakes before You today. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to justify or ignore them. Help me to take responsibility, correct my wrongs, and learn from them. I run to You, knowing that You have my back and are ready to forgive and restore me. Teach me to respond in a way that glorifies You and grows my faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Encouragement for Moving Forward
Everyone makes mistakes, but great people get back up and grow stronger from them.
Don’t let satan turn your mistakes into a prison.
Instead, use them as opportunities to deepen your relationship with Jesus.
Declaration
“I take responsibility for my mistakes and refuse to let them define me. I will acknowledge, correct, and learn from them, knowing that Jesus has my back. My past mistakes are stepping stones for future growth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
