Are You Struggling With Doubts When You Pray?

Matthew 21:22, Hebrews 11:1, Mark 9:23-24

Doubt Is a Common Human Experience

Even some of the greatest heroes of faith in the Bible struggled with doubt at times. Doubt does not mean you lack faith; it means your faith is being challenged in a new way.

Examples from the Bible:

  1. John the Baptist: Despite being the forerunner of Christ, he doubted while in prison and asked, “Are You the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Matthew 11:3).

  2. Peter: He walked on water but began to sink when he doubted (Matthew 14:29-31).

  3. Gideon: He asked for repeated signs to confirm God’s promise (Judges 6:36-40).

What can we learn?
Doubt is not the absence of faith—it is an opportunity for faith to grow stronger.

Why Do We Doubt When We Pray?

  1. Impatience with God’s Timing

    • We often want answers on our schedule, but God’s timing is perfect.

    • Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

  2. Forgetting God’s Track Record

    • When we focus on our current challenges, we forget how God has worked in the past.

    • Psalm 77:11: “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember Your miracles of long ago.”

  3. Listening to Negative Voices

    • Doubt grows when we listen to fear, criticism, or discouragement from others.

    • 2 Timothy 1:7: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”

  4. Focusing on Our Weaknesses Instead of God’s Strength

    • Like Gideon, we may feel inadequate for what we’re asking God to do.

    • 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”

How to Overcome Doubts in Prayer

1. Reflect on God’s Faithfulness

  • Take time to review how God has answered your prayers in the past. This will build your confidence that He is faithful to work in your current situation.

  • Lamentations 3:22-23:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

2. Surround Yourself With Testimonies

  • Talk to or listen to someone who has already received what you are praying for. Their testimony will inspire and strengthen your faith.

  • Revelation 12:11:
“They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

3. Let God Answer on His Schedule

  • Trust that God’s timing is perfect. If the answer hasn’t come yet, it’s not because God has forgotten you.

  • Isaiah 55:8-9:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

4. Replace Doubt With God’s Promises

  • Meditate on Scripture that reinforces your trust in God.

  • Mark 11:24:
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

5. Pray Honestly About Your Doubts

  • Like the father in Mark 9:23-24, ask God to help you overcome unbelief:
“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

6. Stay Committed to Prayer

  • Even when doubt arises, keep praying. Consistent prayer demonstrates your trust in God.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.”

Practical Tips to Strengthen Faith in Prayer

  1. Keep a Prayer Journal

    • Write down your prayers and the answers you receive. Reviewing your journal will remind you of God’s faithfulness.
  2. Memorize Faith-Building Scriptures

    • Fill your heart with verses that remind you of God’s power and love.
  3. Fast and Pray

    • Fasting helps to focus your spirit and align your heart with God’s will.
  4. Focus on God, Not Your Circumstances

    • Shift your attention from the size of your problem to the greatness of your God.
  5. Celebrate Small Victories

    • Thank God for every step of progress, no matter how small. Gratitude fuels faith.

A Prayer to Overcome Doubt

“Lord Jesus, I thank You for being a faithful and loving God. Forgive me for the times I have allowed doubt to overshadow my faith. Help me to remember Your past faithfulness and trust Your perfect timing. Strengthen my faith and fill me with confidence in Your promises. Teach me to pray with a believing heart, knowing that You are able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all I ask or imagine. I surrender my doubts to You and ask for the grace to trust You more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Encouragement

  • Doubt is not the enemy of faith; it is an opportunity for faith to grow.

  • Remember, even the heroes of faith in the Bible struggled with doubt, but they did not let it stop them.

  • Reflect on God’s track record, immerse yourself in His promises, and surround yourself with testimonies of His goodness.

Declaration

“I will not let doubt weaken my faith. I trust God’s promises and His perfect timing. I know He hears my prayers, and I believe He will answer according to His will. My faith will grow stronger through every challenge, and I will see God’s hand at work in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
